How's the intensity in the Markets Division at Global Banks? (UK)

Hi,

I'm curious to know how the pressure differs among various banks such as Goldman, Morgan, JPM, Barclays, BofA, Citi, BNP Paribas, etc.

Is there a more or less defined matrix of high/low intensity and high/low competition where you would place these banks?

And how significant is the difference in culture?

Edit: also, what about the rates desks specifically?

Does this 500 billion dollar Nvidia financing remind you of anything?

Hi,

Especially those who have been through the GFC, are you getting any flashbacks by looking at this deal?

OA for trading internship at SIG UK

Hi everyone!

Just wondering if anyone's gotten the Online Assessment for the trading role yet? I only got the one for equity research, but a recruiter mentioned we should've received the trading one a couple weeks back. Is this pretty standard, or could it be that I won't get it since I already finished the equity research one?

Thank you!

How table tennis is viewed in London?

I am curious whether this sport is well perceived among people on buy and sell side desks and in asset management?

I am asking this as I played the sport competitively, and wonder if I should continue to play it for "networking" and if I should include that in the CV?

is it the right process??

Hi everyone,

I am quite bewildered about connecting with ppl on LinkedIn - I am trying to have a chat with them and learn more about what they do - especially traders and PMs in fixed income. (both sell and buy side). The thing is I am not entirely sure if its ok to invite them for a chat right after connecting? (often I attach the note) What is the right approach to have a chat with them? (I know they can be very busy)

What should I do exactly after connecting? (FYI I only send messages where I am genuinely curious about what they do - nothing else, dont mention any role etc)

Thank you in advance!

Thoughts on the CV for getting into FI asset management/research or trading

Although it's self explanatory, may I also ask what could be missing for trading roles? Especially for the sell - side? Also, should I add another skills line called markets or anything like that? If so, what should it highlight?

Thank you in advance!

Is he the outlier or evidence that the concept "target" uni is BS? (Maybe except investment banking)

I stumbled across his name on IG, and further reading his bio made me think of the question above.

And found similar profiles.

BlackRock analyst programme

Hi everyone

I wanted to ask a few things:

  1. hirevue- what does it check/ look for? Is it just vibes?

What to look for? Any tips?

  1. how are you considered for a chosen business unit (like investment - portfolio management/investment research)?

Do they circulate you within those units until someone is interested?

Thank you in advance!

Schwarzman Scholars in trading (both sell and buy side)

Hi everyone,

I am considering applying to the Schwarzman Scholars program and would appreciate some insight into its value for finance careers.

Specifically, does the program offer tangible benefits for landing a role on a buy-side or sell-side trading desk?

While it is well-regarded in investment banking and consulting, I am curious about its reputation within trading and asset management. Is the prestige present in those areas as well?

Thanks in advance!

Would appreciate some advice

Hi,

I have been trying to network with people who specifically work in Fixed Income, primarily sell and buy side trading desks. (UK)

The strange thing that I noticed: is that after accepting the connection request with a note (I write each of them as personal as possible), I send a follow up (after a few days) but they go silent, and the follow up isnt generic, I try to tailor it to the person and even include a question. Also add an option if he/she open for a call. FYI, I dont use AI to write the messages

Is there anything I am doing wrong to connect with them? (Albeit, THEY ARE BUSY)

Funny, one guy was on the surface very keen to connect with students and chat about his experience on EM sales desk, BUT, when I texted him, he said that he would let me know next week and nail the time. I reminded him on that week, but was left on read and the day I reminded him, he made a post about talking to 19+ students. idk what to make of it. Should I text him again?

And if I may, what to AVOID when connecting with ppl who have 5+ years of experience?

Appreciate ur thoughts!

A wee confusion about networking

Hi everyone,

I hope you can help me clarify a few things about it:

  1. is it actually reasonable to ask for a chat in the first message (on LinkedIn or even instant Bloomberg); I heard many ppl saying you need to offer something - it's a two way road. But what can I offer to someone who has been working in the industry for at least 5 years and I am just an incoming masters student?

  2. hook in the first sentence - to be honest most ppl's profiles are just plain vanilla - they aren't actively posting, to panel speeches etc

What kind of hook can I write?

Is it actually ok to say "your experience is very interesting to me personally because of xyz"?

For context, I am coming to London for MSc finance at a well known uni (not Oxbridge tho).

I am specifically aiming at Fixed Income sell and buy side

Not long ago I started my own small fixed income and macro research on substack.

If you are interested, I would be very grateful to share it with you and hear your thoughts

Many thanks!

Hi

I’m targeting fixed income / macro buy-side roles and would value direct feedback from professionals in macro, rates, credit, FI research, or trading.

What I believe would really differentiate me is a Substack-style research publication where I write trade-framed macro pieces.

Any feedback on positioning, credibility, missing signals, or what to cut would be appreciated. Happy to share the research link by DM.
