How to make line end at the same y-axis as the line above

Say I have a horizontal line and I want to create another line below it. I want it to end at the exact same y-axis (but different points). I previously had an shortcut which aligned it for me when I highlighted the endpoint above then brought the cursor towards the new line, but it no longer works.

Can explain it better with a picture but I don't have that option here.

Gap fill?

How do you typically see this gap filled between the door system and subfloor for flooring run to the door.

It is just under 1.5" deep with a few wedges in between.
