What's the biggest gap in sports analytics? And why is water polo never mentioned?

I've been digging into computer vision sports analytics lately and noticed something: baseball, basketball, soccer, even hockey have pretty mature analytics ecosystems. But water polo? Nothing. It's basically a ghost sport from an analytics perspective.

I'm genuinely curious:

For people working in sports analytics:

  • Is water polo just too niche to bother with?
  • Are there technical barriers to analyzing water polo that don't exist for other sports?
  • Or do coaches/teams in water polo just not care about analytics yet?

I'm not in the industry, so I might be missing something obvious. But it seems like an untapped market—either because nobody's tried it, or because there's a reason nobody bothers.

What am I missing?

Real question: Would coaches/teams actually use a dedicated analysis app for water polo?

I keep wondering about this because I see detailed analytics tools for every other sport, but water polo feels like an afterthought. So genuine question:

If there was an app that could:

  • Auto-generate shot maps from game film
  • Show player movement/positioning heat maps
  • Track individual player stats automatically
  • Give you polished visuals to show players/parents

...would your coach actually use it? Or is game film analysis just not a priority at your level?

Like, I'm not trying to sell anything—I'm actually trying to understand if this is a real problem people want solved, or if coaches are fine with whatever they're doing now.

What's your honest take?
