How To Ship Vintage Pencils

Ordered a Musgrave’s Select 885 #3 for the vintage Musgrave collection I’m working on and the eBay seller really went above and beyond shipping this pencil 👀 🤯

Has this happened to anyone else here?

Traffic 1181 No.2

Enjoying these pencils very much after doing some writing and sketching with them this morning. I picked up a handful of them from eBay. I just started collecting vintage pencils last year — any similar recommendations from this era or earlier?

Musgrave Factory Seconds Haul (16 boxes)

Sorting 16 boxes of Musgrave Factory Seconds was a ton of fun. I grouped them by shape/color/style/label. The 4th picture are some white label pencils I liked and set aside. The last picture shows the Musgrave line pencils I received—some cool tipped Bugles 😎

Goodwill Outlet Pencil Haul

After seeing some pencil YouTubers talk about finding cool pencils at their local thrift stores, I thought I'd try the Goodwill Outlet nearby--it's the type of Goodwill where you dig through huge blue bins of bric-a-brac (or bins of clothing) and pay for your haul by the pound.

Right when I walked in I saw the antique pencil puzzle which felt like a sign there could be pencils buried in the bins under the heaps of plastic containers, old books, discarded toys. I dug through approx 10 bins and found these pencils, eraser, and crayon magnet.

I really love the eyeball pencils, but have no idea if they're very good. I haven't tried the other pencils yet, either, and I'm not sure I'd dig through bins again for pencils. I paid approx $4 and dug for 45 min.

Any idea what this mystery pencil (picture 2) might be? It has a similar ferrule to the USA titanium.

Estate Sale Pencil Finds

Finding pencils was more of a challenge today than the previous weekend, but I found some interesting pencils and related things. I’m particularly interested in trying the Goliath pencil and the little graph pocket notebooks from the early 1990s.

New Pencil Extenders

I had a bunch of extenders where the wooden dowels were falling out and had been taped onto the metal stub holders. I picked pencils that are frequent flyers and comfortable to hold, but I also thought might look cool as an extender. Used an 8mm die and wood glue, let them dry for a day or so, and they're working great. I have a lot of stubs so maybe I'll make more?

Estate Sale Vintage Pencil Haul

Various vintage pencils and related tools from an estate sale I went to last weekend. Pictures 1 & 2 are the total haul sans a metal flat file cabinet. Picture 3 are some pencils I hadn’t heard of or tried before that stood out.

The former owner of these pencils was a fine artist, printer, and teacher here in Portland. I also purchased one of his completed sketchbooks and it is filled with interesting work (bottom of picture 1).

I’m glad to have these pencils and excited to draw with them. I separated them into bins by size and will be drawing with the stubs first.

See any pencils of note that I may have missed?

A handful of teal Musgrave Songwriter 1213 Pencils still available

If you missed out on the teal Musgrave Songwriters, I've confirmed via email that The Artist's Hoard in Shelbyville, TN, has some singles in stock. I just placed an order, but I didn't buy them all (I think).

600 News Hackwing Test Run

After seeing various cool Hackwing pencil posts and watching a video on Pencils Past & Present on YouTube about how to make one (they make a Bugle Hackwing), I felt inspired to try with one of my favorite (maybe my favorite?) pencils. The cut below the ferrule isn’t perfect but it’s a start and I like it.

Vintage Musgrave #2 & Test Scoring - What Era?

I picked up these vintage Musgrave pencils from eBay recently. Does anyone know which era they might be from? I’m thinking maybe the 1990s?

Walmart Pencil Dispenser aka New Musgrave Seconds Pencil Dispenser

Stumbled on this pencil dispenser (relabeled straw dispenser?) in the back to school area at Walmart for a few dollars and it’s working great so far, holding about 1.5 boxes of Musgrave factory seconds. Also, picked up some titaniums out of curiosity. Maybe I need a Musgrave sticker for the front of the dispenser?

Antique Flea Market Accidental Finds

A new antique flea market was happening near my house and I went out of curiosity. As expected it was mostly tools, leather goods, cola and gas signage, and glass cases filled with little odds and ends. I noticed one vendor was using pencils to prop up the lids of their glass cases, and they sold them to me for a few dollars, and then sold me on the bullet pencil at the bottom. The two pencils from China look interesting, also (3 and 4 from the top). Does anyone know anything about them?

New here & Pencil Shields

Stumbled on these when trying to figure out the best way to carry a pencil in my front shirt pocket with a little sketchbook -- they're Pencil Shields from Build-A-Pencil. They've been really great, and they double as a pencil extender for shorter pencils (I still use a standard extender for nubs).

I originally bought a "Pointless Pencil Kit" which comes with 4 shields, 4 short pencils, extra erasers and a sharpener. After realizing how cool the shields are, I wanted to order just more shields. They weren't listed on the website, I emailed them, and they were able to create a listing within an hour or so for me to order just the shields in a 25 pack. They also sell the other components individually.

Overall a really useful product and they seem very responsive to customers. Also, I especially like using them for the random half-used garage sale pencils I've picked up this summer.

Glad to finally be posting and I've learned a ton here.
