Fitting the pieces together

We learn different things about Niall and Ruben as the show progresses. Sometimes it is difficult to fit all these pieces together. Which pieces do you find hard to integrate?

For instance, that line about Niall playing Hamlet was jarring. Here was Niall, bullied in high school and timid, feeling lost as a freshman and calling his big brother and then getting bullied by him, has the confidence to play Hamlet and then later on we hear he was the director of the drama club (of whatever title the Oxford don used, can’t remember exactly). It’s hard work to fit all these pieces together and then made harder by switching actors.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the younger Niall identify to some extent. But sexually timid and has his first sexual encounter overseen by Ruben and then becomes a sex addict and exhibitionist in the car. Big switch!

Then Ruben who hardly goes to school later spouting a line like “I am your muse”! lol, he does say he has been reading but I still find that hard to believe. I guess people have time to read in prison.

Perhaps these hard switchbacks in character development are what I am being asked to integrate.

Please explain the timeline

I had somehow gathered that Niall was 15 in 1989 when Ruben is released from prison the first time at 17. Is this correct?

If yes then I can begin to figure out the show timeline and what seems to me to be anachronistic. It may not be.

I can watch the show again to figure it out but this seems faster! Thanks.
