Rotator cuff surgery/physical requirements with reasonable accommodations?

My husband is a RSR for Frito-Lay. He works big stores, so he does not drive a truck - he has deliveries and merchandisers on his route. That being said, the physical requirements do says an RSR has to be able to lift 40 lbs "with or without accommodations, " which is vague.

He tore his rotator cuff (not work related). He gets 20 weeks from our state of partial pay and job protection, but I'm wondering if he'll be able to go back to work. I'm not sure he could meet the requirements of the job post-surgery, unless no two handed lifting for 3 months (ie, ordering but not merchandising or merchandising with 1 arm) is considered a "reasonable accomodation." or what is an example of a reasonable accommodation? Is there a scenario where he would be able to return to work before months of PT? He'd lose not only pay, but seniority and his route.

Can he make an argument for his job back during months of PT (which extends beyond 20 weeks), or is Frito-Lay going to kick him to the curb?

We've already asked the union and they just referred him to HR. Trying to arm ourselves with knowledge (no pun intended) before we get to that point.

For those interested in the full physical requirements for RSRs, it is below. Thanks in advance.

Frito-Lay Route Sales Representative (RSR) positions require physical stamina for active, on-the-foot delivery and merchandising work, as well as passing a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.

Physical Demands & Lifting

• Lifting: Ability to lift up to 40 pounds (such as a case of product, a microwave, or a cinder block) with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Body Movements: Ability to climb, push, pull, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods.

• Reaching & Fine Motor Skills: Frequent reaching, pushing, pulling, and use of fingers.

• Vision: Good depth perception, near acuity, and far acuity.

• Equipment Use: Using hand trucks, carts, and pallets to unload and move products through stores.
