repost: new prius prime owner, EV and HV mode questions

reposting from a diff subreddit!

just got a new 2026 prius phev as a long term investment to hopefully cut down on gas & had some questions

assuming i’ve manually switched to ev mode (not ev/hv auto), i saw some ppl say that hv mode kicks in when you accelerate too hard or exceed maybe 85mph, but also saw others say that it’ll only activate if temps outside reach -10C …can anyone confirm or offer other perspectives?

or does the above only apply if i’m on ev/hv auto? meaning i cld theoretically & manually force ev mode at any time, it‘s just that my battery wld drain faster under high speed/cold temp conditions?

any other insights appreciated! trying to get a grasp of being an ev user

hi there! newly g2 licensed in feb, 22yo F, new 2026 toyota coming in may. need insurance asap and i've come for some opinions

yes, i'm aware all of these are the least ideal conditions for insurance quotes. i know i could've gone with a used car and done about 10 things differently... but due to circumstances i won't be getting into, this is what i have to work with right now

been shopping around for insurance quotes and got the best deal on sonnet (still expensive, but u know.. still better than others). after some digging, sonnet is apparently unreliable, goes awol when you need to actually make a claim, and hikes up premiums on renewal. only thing is i'm seeing the "premiums go up" and "unreliable claim management" complaint for every company i dig into. my main question now is about the legitimacy of sonnet, and how screwed i would be if i signed with them over a more mainstream company like td and etc.

any experience and perspectives appreciated!
