Great car with a silly flaw.

I was putting stuff in the cargo area and it struck me how absurd it is that I need to have two batteries to keep from getting stranded in a new car. After reading about the issue I picked up a decent jump pack before I picked up the car new and have needed it 3 times in 15000 miles of driving. The 12v isn't dead, it's merely suspect and works fine most of the time. I am now wondering if folks have been successful getting it replaced even though it is generally operating?

Flaky carplay connection

I have a 2020 Prius Prime, lowest trim level (so it has the smaller entertainment system). The carplay has always been a little wonky but it's getting worse. It's definitely not the phone or the cable, those have been replaced since I've had the car.

What happens is that when I plug it in, it starts to charge the phone, but whether or not it actually connects to Carplay is variable. Sometimes it connects. Sometimes the phone says it's connected, but it doesn't show up on the car's screen. Sometimes even the phone doesn't think it's connected, but it's still charging. If it won't connect, turning the car off and on often helps.

It used to be that once it did connect, it would stay connected the whole trip. But recently, it might cut in and out while I'm driving. Very annoying.

Does anyone else have this problem or figured out a way to fix it? Thanks!

2023 prius prime. Best decision I ever made.

So we just had a big storm in the Chicagoland area a lot of people lost power. My neighbor across the street and elderly man lost power. Seeing that I still had power because I have an off-grid solar system he asked me to charge his phone in his life support wrist bracelet . Being in a sickly state that he is, his cell phone went dead he has no a/cand his life support wrist fob need a charging, and no lights. Mind you my neighborhood do not have street lights so it gets very dark if you don't have on your porch and outside lights. I was able to take my Prius and park it in his driveway and powered his refrigerator, cell phone, life support monitor, and lights throughout the house. What a lifesaver. I bought this vehicle just for occasions like this.

Adding a 1500w power inverter and taking away CHG mode has to be the worst part about this car

How does this make any sense? Is there something I'm missing? 2026 plug in hybrid

Just got a 2026!

Super excited. Wanna charge asap. Can I plug the new Prius charger with regular 110 three prong into this 220v adapter.

Added a little more red

Put some caliper covers on today while getting center hub rings installed for the new rims ( tldr - tire shop didn't have the right ones on install date so I had to find some.) pretty cheesy but not too bad 🤷‍♂️

535mpg

Just filled up for the first time since 2/17/2026. Got 535mpg on my latest fillup. Interesting data: I only spent $86.87 / 32.5gal on gas so far (got it Thanksgiving 2025).

Portable jack suggestion?

I'm going to order a full wheel/tire to bring along as a spare for long trips. Any suggestions for a jack, one that won't take up too much space? One, of course, that fits under the car.

Edit: I was thinking maybe this, or maybe this, since it has a lug wrench.

Edit2: I noticed the first jack, the red one, has a flat contact surface; that doesn't seem to be a good fit for the jack point.

Box on the right leaks

The smaller box leaks clear slightly viscous liquid when it’s hot out. Any ideas what it is ?

Weird AC issue

When I start the car, the AC doesn't start and the Auto light is green, but no air is blowing and all the controls are unresponsive both at the tactile buttons and the digital display. However, if I use the windshield wiper fluid pump for even a split second, it suddenly lets the AC system turn on for like no reason.

Anyone else ever experienced something like this? It's a 2018 prime

Gen Five "Hidden Features"

I tried searching for this and I found one post that has dead links to the list I'm looking for. Does anyone have a current list of "hidden features" for the gen five Primes? What I mean by "hidden features" would include holding the unlock button on the fob to roll down the windows, or the "light" signal tap to go from three blinks to five, etc.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thoughts after 5,000 miles, thinking about getting a spare tire

So I bought my 2026 Toyota Prius PHEV XSE Premium in late April, and I’ve already put a little over 5,000 miles on it. It’s been an absolutely fantastic car in every regard. 9.5/10 rating.

My list of complaints or suggestions for improvement is quite short. A slightly higher profile to allow for more cargo space would have been nice, even if the design would’ve been slightly compromised. I am not a fan of the Toyota app, and I will not be paying for a subscription to that when my trial runs out.

Honestly, the biggest thing that worries me about this vehicle is the lack of a spare tire. I’ve had zero issues with the Toyo Extensa tires it came with, but after two long road trips, and reading other people’s experiences with these narrow sidewall tires, I do worry about flats and blowouts. I’m contemplating getting a full size spare rim and tire to carry on longer trips. I feel like it might be worth the $300+ investment.

Anyone else who’s decided to get a spare? I’ve also thought about selling these OEM rims and tires, and purchasing wheels and tires that might be a little more substantial. I don’t know, maybe I’m just being paranoid.

P.S. That is my first generation RAV4, which I will never give up!

P.P.S. I am almost certainly going to get my windows tinted. It gets hot as hell when left out in the sun. I also like a darker interior that is less exposed.

Trying to decide between two Primes

Both are 2020, both are about the same price.

One is charcoal gray, my favorite color for a car — 107,000 miles. The other is black, which I’m not as fond of but 79,000 miles.

Which would you do? Is the difference in mileage significant enough that o should just accept the black car?

This is a really stupid issue, but I would appreciate someone else’s opinion. I’m stuck.

Oil change 2021 Prius prime

I gotta give a shout out to the mechanical engineers who designed these things. Other than having to jack it up, this is easily one of the most consumer minded oil changes for simplicity and location. Time to teach my 4 year old how to do the next one for me…

Myriad of issues

Hey y'all, im in the market for a 5th gen prime/plugin. Ideally but will go with New if it fixes issues below. Through browsing and researching i'm coming across quite a few problems with the 5th gen:

  1. 12v Battery dying
  2. Tire blowouts & tire sizing
  3. Premature tire wear/lack of rear camber adjustment
  4. A/C compressor failure requiring full replacement of hvac lines due to debris

I know some issues are more minor than others, and that there's a false-consensus effect here where those that have issues are more likely to post than those that dont. But i'd still like to get perspectives here on whether buying the 5th gen is still worth despite these issues?

Obviously a solution is to just buy a car with limited warranty remaining or extended warranty, but i'd like to keep the car until the wheels fall off and i'm not seeing that with the current state of Toyota quality. Let me hear your thoughts!

Paint damage or PPF damage?

I knew the paint was softer on these cars, so I got PPF immediately after picking it up from the dealer.

Fast forward to today, a rock from a gravel truck found its way to my hood. The paint protection film did its job I guess, with no tears.

But it looks like the paint underneath still got damaged/cracked?
Or am I not seeing right and it’s the PPF adhesive?

Anyone with a similar problem?
I’ve never seen paint get damaged through PPF like this.

Prime or normal?

Looking at a pre 2022 to keep budget manageable.

Is there any major pros and cons to a 2020 prime compared to a 2019 Prius for example?

Came across 2 that are the same price with 10,000km difference

I’m currently driving a 2005 Prius

Any feedback would be appreciated!
Thank you
