I'm on my 3rd PPI at this point. How long did you all give each med before deciding it was not the one?

Prilosec gave me cramps and constipation. Pantoprazole worked wonders for the first 6 weeks but I became constipated and still had break through acid in the evenings. I moved to twice a day and had extreme nausea and bloating.

I just started Esomeprazole on Tuesday morning. It's been 4 days and this morning I woke up with acid in my mouth and heartburn for the first time since February. Do I switch back to the pantoprazole that kept things as bay for the first half of the day or give the Esomeprazole another few days to see if it works?

I'm on acid watchers diet and haven't changed it up for 10 weeks.

I had a terrible flare end of February with literally every symptom listed for Gerd. Confirmed Gerd and chronic gastritis from endoscopy, was told to stay the course of pantoprazole for 6 weeks. Stopped drinking at this point, dialed in my diet, lost 18lbs. Because!!! I have an 8 day vacation planned that I’m really looking forward to and I want to feel better!

At my 8 weeks follow up I mentioned I’m still having symptoms, less chest pains but still there, acidic taste in my mouth and nausea, esp if I eat anything more than a snack. We discussed trying Pepcid in the evening so I can start eating normal and go on vacation.

Fast fwd to week 10, almost all my symptoms are back and I’m just now starting Pepcid in the evenings. It’s week 10 and my trip is in 2 weeks.

If I was armed with a working upper GI symptom kit, I’d still travel. But the fact that the PPI isnt fixing everything, the Pepcid is tbd and diet is so strict I can’t even eat out right now has me questioning … should I cancel?

What would my fellow GERd and LPR people do?

At this point, sadly even Gaviscon tablets are only working for an hour before the sour taste comes back.
