Pigeons are messing with my ficus!

I don’t understand why is ficus is suddenly popular with the pigeons my mother has been feeding. The pigeons have been throwing away some of the chunky soil, so I’m wondering if they’re still hungry or need play stimulation. All the leaves are fine, they just seem to be focusing on the soil.

Would moss be good to counter act this, or will pigeons rip into it? I’m planning on taking the ficus inside soon anyways, but I thought this was funny. They look like they’ve been having group meetings around my bonsai 😭

Are there stores that sell fresh, tropical fruits?

My mother has been craving summer fruits like mangosteen, star apple, and any tropical fruit that comes from Vietnam. Asian markets on Uptown have some, but they’re either not fresh or just not available.

We’re willing to drive for a long while to get them at ranches and farms, but I don’t think Midwestern weather would bode well for the plants themselves (I hope to stand corrected though).

Asian stores I’ve been to and have had not much luck this summer:
- Tài Nam
- Việt Hoa
- Park to Shop (Niles, Uptown, Chinatown)
- 88 Marketplace
- H-Mart (Niles)

If anyone knows anywhere else to try to find, that would be much appreciated! 🙂 I know there’s also tropical farms in Florida and Texas that also sell and ship nationwide, but I’m wary of online shopping for fruits. However, if someone has a great experience with a specific farm, that would also be great for me to buy!

Stuttering camp for teens in Chicago

I wanted to share this article I saw from my alderman posting it in the newsletter talking about Camp Dream Speak Live! They’re a weeklong camp that focuses on providing acceptance to stuttering and being confident about their stutter. I thought this article was beautifully written, and it shows how effective going against the current stigma of stuttering can really be and how it impacts future generations.

I can’t help but be a little jealous since I wish I had services like this when I was younger, but I’m so happy that younger people have access to this in general!

Why does my desert rose seem allergic to the sun?

I have this desert rose baby since August last year, and it has been growing so much! I don’t know what I did, but it thrives inside my house. Even though I’m very grateful that it loves the house and whatnot, I know that sun exposure will help with my desert rose grow bigger and faster. I’ve been training my desert rose to be comfortable with being out in the sun for three days now, and its leaves keep getting burned. It’s not my first time leaving my desert rose out for sun exposure. I did once in the spring and previous fall, and leaves would burn or just fall out. However, when inside the house, it just grow leaves exponentially.

I know that the simplest answer is to leave the desert rose alone and let it thrive indoors, but I just want to know the particular reason why this is happening. There’s been moments where I have strong sun coming in (I have the desert rose at a south-facing window), and the leaves would start burning a little. The pony clearly loves the sun because the leaves are faced towards the window, but any strong form of sun makes it crumble.

To note: Sun exposure is specifically at 9-10:30AM and is direct. Maybe I need indirect sun instead? Or maybe it’s still just a baby?

How accommodating are hiring supervisors for placements?

I’ve been applying and going to interviews like crazy these past weeks, but it’s affecting my work time at my nonprofit. It’s only my first week at the nonprofit as an office assistant, and I had to take time out for a virtual interview in the middle of the work time. Now, I got a 2nd round interview offer but it’s also in the beginning of my work time where I’m supposed to open up the nonprofit. I’m begging both the hiring supervisor and my boss but my boss is upset at me for essentially skipping work and the supervisor is off today. I need more work because tuition is expensive and I need more money to pay off, but it feels like no one is understanding me and I’m in this weird limbo where everything is uncertain. I wrote another email begging the supervisor but no response (I know she’s off, but I’m just desperate). How did you guys deal with this?
