Hydration tips for the Columbus to Xenia section

Columbus to London:

For southbound, stop in the restaurants at the Georgesville Rd/Sullivant Ave area on Camp Chase Trail, it's the last retail (with convenient water) until London. For reference, it is 19 miles from Amy's donuts to Phat Daddy's without amenities in between.

Norman H via Facebook:

You can get water at park fountains at the London primitive camp area Prairie Grass Trailhead near the Madison County Senior Center, and in Cedarville, Ohio at a park just to the right of the trail when traveling westbound. Also in Cedarville, you can stop indoors at the Hearthstone Inn, the yellow building and they will provide water to refill your bottles or sell you some snacks energy drinks or sodas. They welcome cyclists as they get many of their hotel patrons from cyclists riding the Ohio to Erie trail and have earned a lot of justified consumer goodwill.

You can find gas service stations in west Columbus, London, South Charleston, Cedarville and Xenia.

South Charleston has Shoemakers IGA with bottled water, other drinks, plenty of deli food options as well as groceries. S Charleston also has Chillicothe Pizza Factory and The Purple Monkey Pizza.

Ohio to Erie May 19-May 27

My son, wife and I rode the Ohio to Erie trail the week of May 19, with a couple of days at my sister’s in between. We started in Cincinnati, going northbound. It was our first trip over two days. We drove into Ohio from Arizona, unloaded in Cincinnati, spent the night before heading over the Roebling suspension bridge to the start. Very nice folks in Cincinnati! Camped at Todd’s Fork Adventures the first night. Big thunderstorm rolled through, and once the rain started, we only had a few hours of reprieve!
We had originally planned on camping every other night, but we hadn’t been that soaked in a long time! We switched gears, and stayed in hotels or for the last few nights, at my sister’s house. This meant that all the camping gear carried was more less dead weight!

My biggest takeaways were that I need to pair down my list of stuff I am carrying, be aware that road and trail conditions change, and for me, two beers and a big hamburger may not be the optimal lunch before getting back on the trail!

Great trip, loved the people and the scenery!

Southbound Flip Flop option OTET

A creative solution to a frequent question about parking led to offering a Southbound Flip Flop route which takes advantage of free parking by the Darby Creek and uses the northbound shuttle which usually has more availability.

Ride with GPS (RWGPS) files are posted on the parking page for both sections: Darby Creek to the Ohio River and Lake Erie to Darby Creek.

To start in Southwest Columbus, try this FlipFlop southbound option using the shuttle in the middle Cincinnati to Cleveland.

Part 1: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/50401761

PRE-ARRANGE Northbound Shuttle with Zipi Transit (listed in the Business Directory)

Part 2: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/50401784

To Register and Park:

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park allows parking overnight (or a few nights) as long as you fill out the registration card.

VEHICLE REGISTRATION:

Fill out the form and drop it in the box near the ramp to the westbound trail. If you forget this form, the cards should also be available at the drop box.

Parking Lot Location:

8465 Alkire Road, Grove City, OH 43123

(Sometimes listed as 8465 Alkire Rd, Galloway, OH 43119)

Drop Box Location: 39.893442, -83.216204

The canoe access is west of the circular drive in the parking area.

The parking lot gate is closed at night.

Contrast between the OTET and the GAPCO

It's interesting to see people compare the Ohio to Erie Trail to the GAP+C&O. Although they are close in total distance, they are very different experiences. Generally one trends toward consistency and one trends toward extreme variety. Both have much to offer, but it's like comparing apples and oranges.
