Anyone converted a Specialized Rockhopper to e-mtb?

Anyone converted a Specialized Rockhopper to e-mtb?

After weeks of searching for a Large hardtail that's in stock, I got my first Specialized (and first 29er) today: the 2026 Rockhopper Sport.

Has anyone done an e-bike conversion on a Rockhopper and can share their experiences, good/bad/ugly?  :)

Starting the conversion in June. Got this model as it checks these boxes for a conversion:

  1. standard bottom bracket to fit DIY motors (73mm BSA threaded)
  2. relatively straight chainline (9mm offset), to prevent chain drops/excessive wear
  3. e-bike rated and durable drivetrain (Shimano CUES 9-speed cassette & derailleur)
  4. e-bike rated chain (KMC eGlide11-Speed)

Better e-mtb mid drive motor w/torque sense: TSDZ2 or DM02 & why?

Speccing my first e-mtb for a pro to do an e-bike conversion. Would you recommend the Tongsheng TSDZ2 or ToSeven DM02 and why?

Motor Requirements:

  1. <= 750W nominal (to stay Class 1 in CA)
  2. fits on standard threaded bottom bracket

Wants:
3. best power-weight-ratio

Concerns: serviceability/repair of ToSeven locally in CA - anyone have experience there?

Am I missing any good candidates?

Motor Model Weight (lbs) Nominal (W) Peak (W) Nom. W/lb Peak W/lb
Tongsheng TSDZ8 10.34 750 1100 72.5 106.4
Tongsheng TSDZ2 8.59 750 850 87.3 99.0
ToSeven DM02 8.37 500 800 59.7 95.6

HPC (Hi-Power Cycles) Recon-M: ISO owner feedback

Looking for owner feedback on this e-bike made in Southern CA by HPC bikes: https://hpcbikes.com/products/recon-m-1

Curious about bike's durability, issues encountered, customer service experience, and ride feel/handling.

Your bike's mileage, year purchased, type of riding (mtn trails, paved paths, gravel, etc) would be really helpful.

The HPC Recon is the only full size folding e-bike on the market afaik. It has a Bafang BBSHD 1000w mid drive motor. Based on Montague Paratrooper folding bike frame used by U.S. military in Iraq/Afghanistan.
