How do you feel about the state of the legal market in 2026?
Happy Canada Day, everyone! Just trying to get a feel on how people are feeling on things. We're approaching 8 years of cannabis being legal in Canada, and I'm curious about a few things.
How do you feel the market is doing? Anything you think could potentially make it better/more accessible/anything else?
I personally feel that we're on the right track, but there's still an overabundance of low-tier garbage with made up percentages flooding the market. Overlooking the occasional "great batch" that mid-tier growers might luck out on, heavy smokers like myself are more or less stuck buying the "premium" (aka high priced) flower to scratch the itch.
I am disheartened at the abysmal profit margins growers are expected to live off of. The government certainly has no issue taxing the ever-loving fuck out of it at every level, but can't be bothered to institute a standardized testing system, method, or testing facility so that the customer isn't being lied to.
Also, a purchase limit of 30g is ridiculous. First of all, it's easily circumvented, I don't need to get into details beyond saying that no minimum wage 22 year old budtender is going to argue with a 40 year old man about whether or not he took the first ounce home before coming back for another. We can go buy as much alcohol as we want, we can buy the entire store out of cigarettes, fuck, we can go gamble away every last penny we have. But for some reason they've imposed limitations on cannabis.
Anyway, rant over I guess. Wasn't expecting this to be quite so negative, but here we are. I'd like to be able to support the legal market entirely, but as it stands now with pricing, purchase limits, inconsistency between batches, etc., I'm finding it impossible for it to fully meet my needs.
Thoughts?
