Snail identification help

I’m running a fishless cycle in a 130 gallon aquarium, and just found snails. I’m really confused and don’t know where they could’ve come from, but I guess plants. We bought duckweed and water lettuce off Amazon and I assume they came in on those.

I’m kind of freaking out because the Internet says that wild cots nails can pass on pathogens and parasites, but I don’t think these count as wild caught if they came on the plants I bought right?

I just wanna make sure they are the type of snail that is safe for my red eared slider to eat and that it’s OK for them to stay in the aquarium. They’re very small, can anyone tell from these pictures what they are?

Okay to have my air pump on a timer to turn it off/on each night/day?

I’ve seen other posts about this here but they all seem to focus on whether it’s safe for filtration to turn the air pump off each night but I’m not worried about that (I have over 3x canister filtration on my tank bc I have a turtle). I’m worried about the air pump somehow flooding or something.

I plan to set up the air tubing with check valves — given this, is it safe to have the air pump click off each night and back on each morning? The reason I’d like to do this is to make sure my turtle isn’t bothered by noise while he’s sleeping.

Thank you:)

How to move water around for the best filtration

I’m doing a fishless (or really I guess turtleless for me) cycle in my new 130 gallon tank getting it ready for my turtle, and I’m noticing there’s an area where the water isn’t circulating as well, so debris is collecting there.

What would you recommend to keep the water moving in an area like this? I thought about putting a bubble wand, but I feel like the bubbles would go up and not across the bottom of the tank. Is there something designed to circulate the water in an area like this? I mean, once my turtle is in there he will also help:)

A moment for SD Chicken Pie Shop Cobb salad.

I’ve been really appreciating San Diego chicken pie shop Cobb salads. They’re filled to the brim, full of really crisp iceberg, lettuce, a ton of bacon and avocado and chicken. They also give you a bigger amount of salad dressing that I’m used to from other restaurants, and it’s homemade. I always get their blue cheese dressing. It comes with a roll and butter, and I usually get a side of chicken gravy to also dip the roll into. I love the chicken pie shop for so many reasons, but just wanted to shout out their salad.

Advice for location of t5 uvb bulb

I have this 3d printed stand I purchased from Etsy for the T5 bulb, but will putting it here (shown in picture) allow my turtle to have enough of his tank away from the UV source? Is there a way to shade the other side? Just ignore the hanging lamps — that’s what I’m using until I figure the t5 out.

Also, how far should the bulb be from my turtle? I have one chart saved in my photos that seems to say like 7 inches, but this chart I’ve included here says more like 10 to 11 inches.

Restaurant recs for first my sister’s first dinner in San Diego as a new resident

My sister is moving here from Switzerland and I want her first dinner here to give her all the best San Diego vibes — I’m thinking amazing Mexican food somewhere by the ocean?

Can anyone recommend a great Mexican spot close to the ocean with the ability to sit down? Maybe with nice dessert spots walkable? But feel free to go off script from that if you have other ideas. Basically, help me plan my itinerary. Thank you!

“San Diego” gift for my sister

My sister is moving back to the U.S. from Switzerland (I know, I don’t get it either, but I’m so excited!) and she’s going to live in San Diego!! Her birthday is coming up right around the time that she’ll be here so I want to get her a combo birthday/housewarming gift that helps her enjoy San Diego or represents San Diego somehow.

So far I thought of zoo passes. But what other gift screams San Diego to you?

I’m also poor lol (which does scream San Diego actually) but I’ll figure that part out. She loves the outdoors and hiking and food and has been learning German for years.

Are these plants safe for my turtle tank?

It would never occur to me to think that aquarium plant companies would use pesticides, but I received hornwort with this label on it. The label says:

“Plant Preparation Guide
These plants undergo pest-free treatment, which may leave trace pesticide residues. A baking soda bath can help neutralize any reside before adding plants to your tank.
Baking Soda Bath Instructions:
• Dissolve 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 1 gallon of water
• Soak the plants for 5-10 minutes
• Rinse thoroughly with clean, dechlorinated water”

Would you follow the instructions and put it in your aquarium, or would this make you not want to? I don’t raise fish, I have a red eared slider (an aquatic turtle) in case that matters.

How to feed greens to turtle without tank getting gross

I feed my turtle his pellets in a separate container to keep his water clean, but I have been putting his greens in his tank because he doesn’t eat them right away – he’ll chomp on them here and there overtime.

However, recently I’ve been having trouble with high nitrates in my tank and I want to stop putting any food matter into his tank.

How do you guys make sure your turtle has enough time to eat their greens? Do you put the greens in the main tank and then just remove it after a day? Do your turtles just eat faster than mine?

Nitrate struggles — how to get them to a safe level asap?

I just got a new freshwater API test kit and the new kit (left) is showing extremely toxic nitrate levels but the old kit (chemicals not expired) is showing relatively normal for my turtle tank. Has anyone ever experienced this?

The old kit has the results I was expecting because I’ve been doing 25%ish water changes due to high nitrates and rinsing my filter media gunk off to lower them (in tank water). But I don’t want to trust it. A test strip is also showing around 50ppm.

If you had high nitrates, what would you do first? As I’ve mentioned we’ve been doing water changes and I’m trying not to collapse my nitrogen cycle but I’m really worried about my turtle. I have floating plants on the way.

Planted tank with pots instead of substrate?

I’m trying to figure out how to add more live plants to my turtle tank. I’ve bought some floating plants, but I would like other plants as well. I don’t want substrate in my turtle tank, but I was wondering if anybody had a planted tank where the plants were planted in like glass globes? And I wonder what techniques you’ve used to get the soil to stay in the pot? I would love to see any tanks like this or similar ideas if you have pictures!

Great tuna melts in San Diego

The best tuna melt in San Diego is objectively at The Marketplace downtown — a little convenience store with a hot food counter. It’s buttery and grilled to where it’s actually melted. I live too far away to DoorDash it to me now, sadly. In trying to find new favorites, I keep getting tuna melts where they are basically just a tuna salad sandwich: It’s like they barely touched a grill, the bread isn’t buttery, the cheese isn’t melted.

I’m looking for a few great tuna melts I can put on my favorites list and check for on DoorDash. Anyone have a favorite around town?

(Originally posted in SanDiego sub but they asked me to move so unfortunately previous replies were deleted. Which is super annoying. But they included: Fishery in PB, Rudford’s, Studio Diner, Mitch’s Best Seafood, Gravity Heights - with caveat that poster didn’t like food there in general, Board and Brew, and… if I remember others I will edit to add.)
