Fuzhou Fried Oyster Fritter / Cake for $3 from Old Yang’s Oyster Cake in Flushing

Couldn’t find a Google Maps link, but they’re across from White Bear (Google Maps link). This also looks to be their Fan Tuan page. Have seen them called Old Yang or Lao Yang’s Oyster Cake.

Oyster cakes are a popular Fuzhou street food snack. This was delicious. Fried fresh and very crispy, it’s filled with cabbage, seaweed, dried shrimp, carrots, Chinese chives, pork, oysters, and peanuts. There was actually a decent amount of oysters.

I continue to be impressed by the regional food that can be found in NYC.

Edit: good tip from houj530 in the comments -

>He’s not consistently there and sometimes by boa on maple, would recommend calling ahead 3474480007. thats the number found on the side of his cart

Q Halal on the Upper East Side. Platter includes pita, falafel, and spicy fries. They often give free falafel while you wait.

Great lamb and chicken over rice. If I remember correctly, think it was $11? Love all the fixings included. Very nice guys. Don’t miss the amazing green sauce.

Lucia Pizza in Flushing. A longtime neighborhood classic. Est 1962.

https://www.luciapizzany.com/

Great neighborhood spot that’s almost always busy with people in and out. My go-to order is one regular and one Sicilian.

The regular has a good balance of tomato sauce and cheese. The sauce is slightly sweet and tangy while the crust is nicely crispy.

Meanwhile, the Sicilian has a thicker crust, but still airy and chewy. It’s topped with a good amount of cheese with some crisp edges.

$3.50 a slice.

Great peanut noodles ($3.50) and dumplings ($5) at Xiao Xiao Fish Ball - newish Fuzhou spot in Chinatown

Xiao Xiao Fish Ball - Google Maps

The noodles and dumplings were both great! The dumplings were especially plump and filling. You can eat well here for <$10.

For beef short rib lovers: Galbitang (beef short rib soup) from Jinsang Gukbap. Comes with great banchan.

Galbitang / Galbi-tang / Korean beef short rib soup

Enjoyed this meal. The beef short ribs were tender. And the soup was nourishing and hearty while still being clean and light tasting. The accompanied banchan were also great with it.

Al Pastor Pizza from Coba Pizzeria (Sunnyside, Queens)

Coba Pizzeria - Google Maps Page

This was delicious and actually works really well to have al pastor in pizza form. Not pictured is the guacamole sauce that you can drizzle on top or dip into.

Aside from the toppings, the pizza crust itself was very good. Apparently, the dough is fermented for 32-48 hrs for a deeper flavor and better texture.

They have the typical pizzas like margherita and pepperoni and other Mexican-influenced ones like elote and refried beans or mole poblano as the base.

It’s delivery or take-out only. There’s a park next door so you can eat it fresh.

One of my favorite cold noodles: Yun Nan Flavour Garden’s “Cold Rice Noodle” (Sunset Park, Brooklyn)

Yun Nan Flavour Garden - Google Maps Page

On the menu the Cold Rice Noodle is listed rather nondescriptly, so it can be easy to miss, but it’s one of my favorite dishes on the menu.

It’s rice noodles with black vinegar, sugar, soy & chile oil and topped with ground pork, roasted peanuts, and cilantro.

It’s cool, a bit spicy, savory, tangy, and refreshing. The noodles have a satisfying springy texture.

Also great are their dumplings in hot and sour sauce.

Xi’an Famous Foods: I usually get N1, but the move in this hot weather is A1 Liang Pi “Cold-Skin Noodles”

https://www.xianfoods.com

Very refreshing. Noodles are chilled and served with bean sprouts, cucumber, cilantro, and spongy cubes of seitan. Tastes even better if you add more soy sauce-black vinegar. It’s also vegan for those interested.

And of course, still have to get my spicy cumin lamb fix with their lamb burger.

Queens Night Market: Bajan fish cakes and bake, Native American frybread, St Lucian rice pelau, & Fujianese muahchee and peanut noodles

https://queensnightmarket.com

Saltfish Shack - Bajan fish cakes and bake combo

The fish cakes are blended with herbs, peppers, and spices which I got with the sweet and tangy tamarind sauce. Lots of flavor packed in that cake.

As for the bake, it’s light, fluffy, not-too-sweet and even better with the caramelized rum sauce.

Buffalo Jump - Native American frybread with wojapi

It might “just” be fried bread, but for me it’s deliciously crispy on the outside and super fluffy on the inside. It serves as a perfect pillowy vessel for the sweet and tart blueberry sauce.

Bevo’s Kitchen - St Lucian rice pelau

Very comforting like a one pot cooking situation that soaks up all the flavors of what’s thrown in.

The hot sauce was very good and I wished I had asked for more.

Also, all their dishes are vegan.

Muahchee Alley - Fujianese muahchee (mochi) and peanut noodles

The peanut noodles are more commonly found at Fujianese spots, but I don’t see muahchee often, if at all.

The muahchee was satisfying chewy and so good combined with the crunchiness of the sweet crushed roasted peanuts.

Reminder that this is the last year of the $6 price cap. After that, there will be a new price cap, which I haven’t seen what it will be yet.

They’re playing the World Cup on a big screen, if you’re interested.

Lastly, would recommend going early to avoid lines. And if there are vendors you want to check out, double check the weekly vendor list to see if they will be there.

Eaterniti and Anda Tea: Combination Burmese street food and bubble tea shop (Elmhurst, Queens)

Eaterniti - Google Maps Page

Good, casual spot for Burmese street food and bubble tea.

- Nan Pya Thoke (flat noodle salad chicken)

- Bane Mont (Burmese pancake) - It’s made of rice flour and not-too-sweet. Really enjoyed this.

- Laphat Thoke (tea leaf salad - Fermented tea leaves with cabbage, tomatoes, lime and crunchy beans.)

$2.90 sliders with 100% grass-fed beef from Jubilee Marketplace in Greenpoint. They also have $5 whole rotisserie chicken.

Jubilee Marketplace (Greenpoint) - Google Maps Page

Very tasty and high quality sliders, especially for the price. They’re more hefty than the average slider. Apparently the margins are very low on them.

Used to be $2.55, but understandably higher now given everything is more expensive. Also used to be called a burger, but they caught some flak due to the size. Still a good deal and still cheaper than a subway swipe.

Their whole rotisserie chicken for $5 is also a great deal.

Kunafa Bites: my newest favorite food truck makes fresh kunafa until midnight (Astoria, Queens)

Kunafa Bites - Google Maps Page

This Nablus kunafa comes in multiple sizes. This was the medium for $15, if I remember correctly. Took about 7-8 min to freshly make. It was excellent. Crispy on top with gooey stretchy cheese on the bottom. It was sweet, syrupy, and nutty from the pistachios.

I damn near wanted an XL for myself.

The people working the truck are very friendly and gave out some free samples at the time. They also have other sweets like baklava, basbousa, and more.

Farook Halal & Santa Halal: $7-8 halal cart platters still exist!

These two carts are next to each other near Union Square, on 14th St between Irving Pl and 3rd Ave.

Both carts easily punch above their weight class. They taste better than other $10-12+ platters I’ve had.

Their chicken or lamb over rice are $7 while the combo is $8. Both include pita. Portions are good.

Both have loyalty cards:

 • Farook - buy 7, get 1 free
 • Santa - buy 10, get 1 free

I personally prefer Farook because the meat tastes more tender and flavorful. Something more unique that Farook does is that they ask if you want hot sauce in the beginning. If so, they cook the meat in it, which adds even more spiced flavor. It’s not too spicy.

Santa is still good and seems to have a more herbal complexity, which I can see people preferring.
