Which restaurants will be easier to get into this weekend due to people going away for the holiday weekend?

Any particular place you are looking to go that would typically be busy on the weekend but likely to have openings as many people in NYC head out of town this weekend?

Recent eats: Gao Xiao Pa, M&O Market, White Bear, Claude Bakery, Apollo Bagel, Wegman's

Gao Xiao Pa

Big ol' hat-tip to u/justflipping for the word on this one. I read that this place gets slammed on weekends so I took the opportunity this morning to check it out. I actually tried to go last Thursday via the LIRR, but the fire killed that plan quite definitively. (Today was E > 7 then 7 > 1.) Anyway, the $6 roujiamo was as excellent as advertised. Got it spicy. Check out the chicken. I'd never had a flatbread like this before, incredibly flaky, impossible to not litter the sidewalk with pieces of it. I suspect they're like that rice roll cart on Hester Street so I'd say go at off-peak hours.

M&O Market

On Wednesdays they do their roast beef, which is nice and tender. They have a little tablet for ordering now but not everything is on there. I usually just pick one of their creations, which in this case was a hero of roast beef with havarti, shrooms, and horseradish mayo. Great stuff and rather cheaper than what one might pay at some more hip places (looking at you, Court Street Grocers, although I do like you).

White Bear

Their wontons are still as good as ever. There's something they do to the pork mix in these that gives it a bit more dimension than, say, what's in the dumplings at Shu Jiao Fu Zhou (although those are quite different, and exceptional on their own terms). $10 for a dozen, still cash-only. Eat em in the park. Watch out for that oil.

Claude Bakery

Their heirloom tomato croissant appears to now be a permanent menu item, or at least long-term seasonal. This has Swiss under the tomato and shredded 2-year mimolette on top. I don't think the Swiss is necessary, and Claude's tomatoes seems to be a bit less consistent than Radio Bakery's, but Claude is (for me) right here and Radio Bakery sure as hell isn't.

Apollo Bagel

Don't give a fuck about whether they're "real", they're excellent. I'm not much for seafood in general so this is a sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese, tomatoes, capers, olive oil, and salt and pepper. The capers are an extra $1 but let me tell you, I get them every time. And of course I always go on weekdays to avoid the lines. This was from the WV location.

Wegman's

Including them for the sole reason that they have premade beefs-on-weck for purchase and they're not half-bad. The roll is what it's supposed to be, and the sandwich is big enough to make two meals from if you have a smaller appetite like me. The horseradish that I picked up from the EV Meat Market was underwhelming, though, very little bite.

I was the one who asked you for Chelsea Market recommendations and I wanted to say thanks

An overwhelming number of you said to go to Very Fresh Noodles but warned me about the line. There were only 3-4 people on line and wow the spicy cumin beef dry noodles were as good as you said, the hype was real. I went to Seed & Mill for the ice cream you recommended but they had closed at 6:30 yesterday. I’ll definitely be coming back down from Westchester again for this

Egyptian snacks/takeout in Central-South Brooklyn?

Hey y'all, does anyone have a tip on good Egyptian takeout in the BK Heights/Western Atlantic Ave area?

Watching the Uysk-Rico fight tomorrow, and wanted to do Egyptian snacks. If I have to go up to Astoria in the morning, I will do, but would love to get something closer.

TIA!

What’s the best day to walk into Four Charles on MDW?

My husband and I are thinking about shooting our shot at Four Charles this weekend since it’s a holiday and the city will be quieter, plus the weather is supposed to be pretty bad.

We want to walk in — which day do you think we’d have the best luck? We can try for lunch Saturday or Sunday (was advised to show up before they open, around 10am) or dinner on Monday aka Memorial Day (we’d show up around 3pm).

Not sure what’s the right move because of the holiday or if this is even a good plan given that others may have the same idea, but any advice for when to try (and how to maximize our chances of getting a table) would be great.

Thanks so much!

Vegan/Eggless Bakery Recommendation (not preorder)

Hi! I did some searching here and in the vegan sub but inquiries tend to be for preordering cakes for events, etc.

My family and I will be in the city for his birthday this weekend -- he avoids eggs so I'm looking for some eggless/vegan options that I can pickup from a bakery. (Not preorder)

Max budget is 30-40 dollars (but it's not a hard limit). I'm looking for cupcakes/slices or maybe mini cakes? around 1-2 regular servings

Pricey omakase at 1 Michelin star Joji: my review.

Hard for me to justify that this was the 2nd most expensive meal of my life, > $700 after tax and tip. I don’t think I’m an omakase fan but I’ll probably still check out Sushi Sho.

Omakase priced at 450, I got the supplemental uni/hairy crab for 80, iced green tea was 20. Not pixtured, ice cream with caviar was 50 but they comped it for my first visit.

YOLO. To each their own.

Now that I’ve been to Sushiro, I’m beyond pumped that it’s coming to NYC! Sorry, Kura!

Hello from Ginza! Is anyone else pumped for the opening of Sushiro in NYC? I didn’t think it could get better than Kura, but, my goodness, Kura sucks compared to what we just experienced here. Super excited for it to open! If you’re on the Sushiro marketing team, please DM me!

Need help deciding on diner with Gluten free options near W 54 st

I know there’s probably posts like this all the time so apologies… family cannot decide on one place to try out tomorrow. Options include Friedman’s, Carnegie Diner, and Brooklyn Diner. Pls lmk if any of these places are on your favourites list and if you have any suggestions that would be so welcome!

And if there’s anywhere that’s further away that’s okay, we haven’t been here in a very long time so open to exploring.

Din Soup Dumplings 鼎泰轩 | Brooklyn Heights Mini Dumplings

Their mini dumplings tasted really good, as well as their crab & pork soup dumplings. I just wish they provided more mini dumplings and didn’t add a bunch of lettuce at the bottom of the container to give the illusion that there were more than there actually were.

Is modern bread and bagel an authentic New York bagel?

Has anyone had a bell from modern bread and bagel (GF) but has also had regular NY bagels? If so how do they compare? Because I know everyone says they are good but compared to other GF bagels that wouldn’t be hard to do!!! Basically my question is are they good for a GF bagel or a good ny bagel in general? TY!

Event focused on eating locally and sustainably tomorrow in DUMBO.

Hey folks, trying to earn some supportive husband points here.

My wife is hosting an event tomorrow night in DUMBO, and I’m helping her fill the last few seats.

It’s a mix of marketplace/panel/community event around sourcing better local food in NYC. Farm to People, Seasonal, Groundcycle, etc.

If that sounds interesting:

I love Caffe Panna ice cream, but it’s a frustrating business

Don’t get me wrong, their ice cream is amazing but there are several things about this business that really frustrate me.

  1. The hours are already limited (9:30pm closing) and
after seeing all their creative flavors posted on Instagram, you get there at 8:30 and they are out of almost all their flavors except one or two, one if which is usually a sorbet. For people who are coming for the first time, they don’t realize they essentially having nothing left until they get to the front of the line.

  2. They do nothing to help move the line along. On a busy summer night they have one person taking orders, who does not appear to be in any sort of a rush. Meanwhile, there are 5-10 people behind the counter seemingly socializing or on their phones. Sometimes a second person comes out to take orders from people on the line, which helps a lot, but it just goes to show how easily they could speed up the line.

  3. Given all this, their ice cream is super expensive, which of course is not unique for nyc ice cream, but still frustrating that you pay $6.50 for a size literally called “tiny.”

Love their ice cream but wondering if others share any of these frustrations.

NYC Cookies Ranking - 12 spots from lower manhattan.

I love cookies and my girlfriend loves me. For my birthday she hunted down 12 different cookies that we either have been curious to try or that have been claimed as the best at some point or another. Here are our rankings and a bracket competition. Disclaimers below:

  1. We’ve had levain and insomnia before.
  2. She organized them so I would not know where they were all from (with the exception of levain and insomnia)
  3. We DID NOT eat each cookie entirely. Probably would have gone to the hospital. We each sampled between 1/8th to 1/4th per person.
  4. All cookies were generally representative of a chocolate chip cookie (a few variations as recommended).
  5. None of the cookies were reheated, all were eaten at room temperature. They were all picked up day of.
  6. Cookie #1 was the insomnia cookie cake, since it covers the label on the paper.

Below is the key for the numbers in the bracket.

  1. insomnia
  2. schmackarys
  3. levain
  4. hani's
  5. think coffee
  6. gramercy tavern
  7. from lucie
  8. petit chou
  9. smor
  10. win son
  11. librae
  12. balthazar

Best Caesar salad with a vinaigrette-y dressing in the city?

I love Caesar salads so much, in any form, but my favorite is when they have a lighter more vinaigrette-y dressing and not super creamy or mayo heavy. Burger Heaven (RIP) used to have a dressing like that and I could have had that salad 5x a week. Any recommendations for your favorite with this style dressing?

The “Variety Burger” at Hearth in the East Village

VARIETY BURGER
grass-fed beef brisket, liver, heart & bone marrow with caramelized onions & fontina on a sesame milk bun, served with beef fat-fried potatoes

I am shocked this is not on the top of any lists of best burgers in the City. The smoky beefy flavor comes through naturally from a wild and incredibly varied blend of cuts that are masterfully blended with the perfect onions and choice of cheese, toasted home made bun, beef tallow fries… just incredible. I was too mesmerized to capture the cross-section.
