Taking my BYOK to a Type-In

So I was in on the Kick Starter campaign and have a white BYOK (lucky me!) I’m also rather well known in the typewriter community as a YouTuber (https://www.youtube.com/user/JoeVCA/videos) and have been organizing public typewriter events in my community for a number of years. This coming Saturday we have another Type-In here in Albuquerque (at Pennysmiths Papers) and along with typewriters I’m thinking about bringing my BYOK and keyboard, as a way to introduce the public to the idea that, after a 35 year stasis of no further development in typewriters (with electronic daisywheel machines in the 1980s) we now have this new technological development of “digital typewriters,” which are writing-specific dedicated devices, the BYOK being the standard-out example at the moment.

I‘m excited to see how people react and will let you know here how it goes. In the meanwhile, write on!

Charging via USB-C Seems Sub-Optimal

I have the white BYOK with the most recent firmware version (1.1.2). I normally use a wired keyboard and thus disconnect the keyboard to charge the BYOK device via USB-C. Here's my experience with charging the device:

1) BYOK is powered off, keyboard disconnected.

2) Plug in charger to USB-C port. The BYOK device powers up, screen turns on to maximum brightness, charging LED slowly flashes.

3) Screen stays on full brightness for several minutes with charging LED slowly flashing, then eventually the screen turns off, with charging LED continuing to slowly flash as the device charges.

My question: Does the device have to power-on the screen in order to charge? This seems sub-optimal, especially turning on the screen to full brightness. Maybe this is a nitpick, or maybe I'm used to phones and the way they charge (or, say, other devices like digital cameras that don't need to fully power up in order to charge).

Also, I can't find a way to shut off the screen once charging has started, without interrupting the charging cycle (and hence the charge LED turns off), at which point I have to disconnect/reconnect the USB-C power to resume charging.

Yes, I can wait the requisite time for the screen to shut itself off, but this seems a nuisance, especially if in a dimly lit situation (like going to sleep) and the bright screen is otherwise a distraction.

Otherwise, the BYOK is perfect! Thanks again to the team for all your hard work.
