The historical context behind the Palestinian flag: Why its symbolism represents expansionism and supremacy

When discussing the Palestinian flag, the conversation usually focuses on modern politics. However, if you look closely at the actual history and the historical meanings behind the colors of the flag, it carries a very different message—one rooted in imperial conquest, violent expansion, and Islamic supremacy.

The flag’s design is based on the Pan-Arab colors, with each element explicitly chosen to honor a specific historical era:

The Black Stripe (Abbasids) & The White Stripe (Umayyads): These colors represent dynasties that built their empires through aggressive military conquest. The Umayyads and Abbasids subjugated native populations across the Middle East, North Africa, and Southern Europe, establishing an imperial system where non-Muslims were reduced to second-class citizens (dhimmis) and forced to pay a submission tax (jizya). Waving these colors fundamentally praises historical Islamic expansionism.

The Green Stripe (Fatimids): This represents a system built on religious lineage and Islamic supremacy, reinforcing the idea that governance and societal hierarchy should be dictated by Islamic law and Islamic authority over other cultures.

The Red Triangle (The Arab Revolt / Martyrs): Originally representing the Hashemite revolt against the Ottomans, the red color is explicitly used to honor the blood of "martyrs." In the modern context, this has transitioned into hallowing and applauding militants and terrorists who carry out violent attacks under the guise of national or religious liberation.

When people wave this flag, whether they realize it or not, they are not just waving a symbol of modern statehood. They are flying a banner that historically celebrates violent territorial expansion, honors militancy, and promotes the supremacy of one culture and religion over all others.
