I graduated this year with a bachelor’s degree in Special Education in Turkey, and I’m currently considering my options for graduate study.
I’m very interested in speech and language development, especially working with children with autism and intellectual disabilities. However, Speech and Language Therapy is a separate four-year undergraduate degree in Turkey. As far as I know, I cannot qualify as a speech-language pathologist here simply by completing a master’s degree; I would have to return to university and complete the four-year undergraduate SLP program.
Is the pathway different in the US or in other countries? Can someone with a bachelor’s degree in Special Education complete prerequisite courses, enter an SLP master’s program, and eventually become a licensed SLP?
I would especially like to hear from anyone who entered the field with a bachelor’s degree in Special Education or another related subject. What additional coursework did you need, and how long did the entire process take?

Hi everyone, I graduated from university this year with a degree in Special Education, and I’m planning to pursue a master’s degree. I’m currently considering four areas: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Special Education, Intellectual Disability, and Gifted Education.
In your opinion, which of these fields has the strongest future in terms of research opportunities, academic career prospects, and professional development? Which one would you recommend choosing for a master’s degree today, and why?
I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences and opinions, especially from people who are currently studying or working in these fields.
