Question: Why don't you share that you are T1D?
Hi Everyone! I wanted to ask here because I just want more info. My bf (45M) is T1D and was diagnosed at 13. He is very guarded about the fact he has diabetes. He rarely says anything to others who aren't close friends or family because, as he says, he doesn't want to be pitied. I don't expect him to wear a shirt and announce it daily (even though he does have a Walter Brimley shirt that he wears) but it is challenging at times when he wants to know the carb count while traveling but refuses to ask or is struggling with a low/high day and doesn't want to say what's going on. I let him lead in regard to how he handles things because it's his body and he's been doing it for more than half is life.
Is he just stubborn or is this a common feeling?
Edit 1: I want to clarify that I don't care either way. I do agree it's his personal life and he doesn't have to share but I just was curious if it's a common feeling. He lives with it every day and I don't. All I can do is help when he asks and carry low snacks for when we need them.
Edit 2: Thanks for all the feedback and insight. To put a cap on this I don't care if he does or doesn't tell people, I was curious. And to some messages and comments...no I am not trying to save him or manage it for him. The things I do to help have been things he's either asked or I noticed he appreciated when I did them. Again thanks for the insight.
