Inheriting the proud history of Epirus and the Illyrians, Albania would fall to the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century. Mainly revolts would be launched and fail over the centuries. It was only in 1912, with the Ottomans distracted by revolts in Yemen and the Balkan Coalition that Albania would once again be free. But foreign powers would immediately try to swoop in and seize influence. The Greeks, Italians, and Serbs would all try and destabilize the country. The great powers forcibly placing a German prince, William of Wied, as the Albanian leader, wouldn’t help. Albania would stay out of the Second Balkan War, and when the Great War started, they would try to stay out of there as well. Sadly, that would not come to pass. The shattered remnants of the Serbian Army would flee to the Albanian countryside from the Austrian and Bulgarian forces, prompting an Austrian invasion and occupation. And the entire government up and fled to Germany, leaving Albania without a leader for years. As the guns were finally set down a few months ago, Albania would begin the process of stabilization. Let us see what the future has in store for the double-headed eagle.
