now it's a proper shelf layout

As part of rearranging the house I have decided to mount the railway to the wall, making it a proper shelf layout.

The track is 150 cm above the floor, placing it at a good height for operation and still accessible for continuing the scenery.

By raising the layout it creates a lot more space in the room which we plan to use for hobby and work desks.

The layout sits on 2 steel wall mounts, in total rated for 100 kg, hopefully I never need to test that.

Next steps are to extend a single track around the perimeter of the room to allow for continuous operation.

Designed, printed and now painted!

I've finally finished painting my engine shed, signal box and water tank buildings which I had designed and 3D printed.

Designed using SOLIDWORKS, 3D printed on Prusa Core One.

I think I'll use some weathering powders to add an extra bit of detail, but so far I am really pleased with the look. This layout has been my first go at detailed design and painting.

Summer layout update

Been making some progress with my OO gauge UK heritage/branch line shelf layout in recent weeks.

As previously posted I have been painting the station scenery, and road bridge scenic breaks. I have also designed and printed a low relief warehouse/barn.

Also new this week has been the addition of the off-scene track. Not quite a fiddle yard but helpful for some operating with longer trains.

In future I would like the option to make this layout into a loop, I have just about enough space if I use 2nd radius curves, with approx 95 cm to play with, as you can see I am limited by the size of the room!

The next jobs are to complete the engine shed and signal box, and to fit the backscene.

Finished painting my station, really pleased with the result!

I've been designing, 3D printing and painting a station scene for my UK branch/heritage line.

After a week of painting I've finished the platforms, scenic break bridge and station building.

I think I'll add a yellow line to the platform edge - maybe with a paint pen? Any feedback on the best approach is appreciated.

Will also be adding some fencing and details to finish.

designed, printed and now painted my own station scene

Since February I have been designing and printing my own structures, this week I finally bit the bullet and jumped into my least favourite part... painting 🎨🖌️

So far I am really pleased, as shared earlier in the week it is my first go at textured brick work.

I'm a little uncertain how to get a good finish on the platform surface - looking for weathered tarmac/concrete finish, or untidy grey 😅. Any feedback or ideas welcome.

Next task is the engine shed and signal box at the far end of the layout.

First go at painting brickwork!

First attempt at printing textured brickwork!

Tamiya red brown base coat followed by desert sand for mortar, used paper towel to quickly wipe away the excess.

Added a few spots of darker greys to break up the pattern, I think I might have over done it, but for a first attempt I am pretty happy!

Locomotion

Some snaps from the Locomotion museum in Shildon, well worth the visit!
