Oliver Otis Howard

Can someone please attempt to explain why Howard has seemed to gain a better reputation in the last decade or so?

While he’s certainly not Dan Sickles, his service in the AOP was rough at best, with him being a major cause of the defeat at Chancellorsville, and his hands-off command style allowing thousands of Union troops to be caught or killed running through Gettysburg.

His experience as Sherman’s subordinate is a better showing, but overall I can’t understand why people seem to treat him like Hancock or Reynolds. Is this a recent phenomenon, or am I genuinely underrating him?
