Manager watching cameras live

I’ve been employed at hyvee for six years now and have never experienced something like this. Lately, we’ve had an upper manager sitting in their office watching the front end workers LIVE. This is not a store director, assistant store director, corporate employee, or even a store operations manager. This manager, while watching us live on cameras, will call down to customer service if they see ANYONE standing around, leaning, or simply waiting to be told what to do. They will tell employees to find something to do or to GO HOME if they see this on cameras. Today, this manager called down and I answered. They said “tell that kid to go do something”. I responded “what kid?”, not seeing him behind a display. This manager told me “look behind that display, you’ll see him”, indicating that I was being watched as we spoke.

This manager is very aggressive, rude, and makes insanely tone deaf remarks. They have had many complaints made against them. For me, this has been the final straw. This makes me extremely uncomfortable. I do not think it is okay whatsoever, in the slightest, to be watching employees live as they work and calling down to customer service to tell people what they are doing wrong. This is a step above micromanaging, and puts everybody on edge.

Maybe I’m being sensitive, maybe we should all work under the assumption that we’re being watched live… but something seems… icky about this. None of us are okay with this. Like, how is this manager being a productive employee if they are just sitting in an office for most of the day watching cameras??????

Let me know your thoughts, I’m open to different interpretations and ideas about this.
