I finally paid off the phone bill from 1996 xD
I’ve been obsessing over Duke Nukem 3D lately, not just because it’s a classic, but because of what we had to go through just to play it.
I was just looking through some old footage and it brought back the memory of the battles my cousin and I had back in the day. We were convinced that if we lied to our parents and called it a 'modem test,' we could get away with hours of 1v1 deathmatches. We spent half our time playing, and the other half sweating bullets that someone would pick up the landline and kill our connection.
It makes me realize how different (and honestly, a bit hollow) gaming feels now that everything is just one click away.
I put together a video talking about that era and why the 'struggle' of the 90s made the win feel like an actual victory. Would love to hear if anyone else has a better 'modem lie' story than mine haha
