Cried all the tears I could fry?

In the lyrics it says "Cried all the tears I could cry" but I can hear it "fry" instead of "cry".

Hi,

I've been a web developer for 15+ years. I've worked on everything from small business sites to complex enterprise-level WordPress builds — custom themes, plugins, performance optimization, headless setups, you name it. My work is solid, my clients on top vetted freelance platforms consistently rate me highly, and I have zero issues getting repeat work or referrals within those platforms.

What's funny is that unlike a lot of developers who burn out on WordPress over time, my passion for it only grows stronger with each passing year. The platform keeps evolving and so do I — which is probably why I'm still all-in after 15 years.

Here's my problem: outside of those platforms, I'm invisible.

I also attend WordCamps regularly. I show up, I meet people, I have good conversations — and still nothing converts into actual work.

And I'm not standing still — I've scheduled my WordPress VIP exam in two weeks and I'm studying daily to pass it. I want to keep leveling up, but I'm starting to wonder if certifications and credentials even matter when you can't get in front of the right people in the first place.

What I've tried:

  • LinkedIn (my profile exists but barely gets views)
  • Upwork (feels like a race to the bottom on price)
  • Cold outreach (awkward, no responses)
  • WordCamps (great for learning and community, but haven't landed a single client from them)

What I think my problem is: I've spent 15 years doing the work, not marketing myself. I'm great at WordPress, but so is everyone claiming to be on Fiverr for $5.

My questions for this community:

  1. If you're a freelancer who successfully finds your own clients — where do they actually come from?
  2. How do you differentiate yourself when everyone claims to be a "WordPress expert"?
  3. Is niching down (WooCommerce, membership sites, agency white-labeling) the real answer?
  4. Does a portfolio site actually convert clients, or is it all referrals and network?
  5. Is WordCamp even worth it for client acquisition, or is it purely a developer community?
  6. Do certifications like WordPress VIP actually move the needle with clients, or is it just resume decoration?

Thank you
