The super sigma aura amount of time you actually need to study every night 👀

If we look at the webpages for BTEC Firsts (equivalent to 1 GCSE), we see that they give the recommended Guided Learning Hours (classroom time) as 120, and the Total Qualification Time (classroom time + independent learning) as 160. From this, we can infer that for every GCSE that one does, they should study for a total of 40 hours overall.

If we apply this to 200 school days over year 11, students should study roughly

  • 1 hour every night if they do 5 GCSEs;
  • 1 hour and 30 minutes every night if they do 7 or 8 GCSEs; and
  • 2 hours every night if they do 10 GCSEs.

with studyless weekends as a bonus. This is a rough guide, and may not apply to everyone's situations. If you have learning difficulties, or want exceptionally high grades, then you may need to increase this. For the average student, this estimate would be fine.

While studies do show a positive correlation between study hours, and exam attainment, they also highlight there being multiple factors to attainment, including study quality, and personal wellbeing. This guide is intended to be used with high-quality study techniques, which include the bread and butter of active recall, and spaced repetition. It is also intended to find a strong balance between studying and free time, because work hard, play hard or smth its 10pm i cant think

also i heard if you vote anti STEM-warrior league you can get study tips that actually address the pressing questions 👀

how stem warriors look at you when you said you wanted to do triple humanities

the proliferation of these stem warriors who say that youre gonna be homeless if you dont pick octuple stem is insane 😭 they act like there will only be jobs in stem. not everyone wants to be a doctor engineer or scientist

and what really bugs me is that some stem warriors believe that doing any humanities is worthless. stem is of course important, but without them life would be really depressing. not everything can be a number, and now more than ever the skills that they give us is important.

24 HOURS TO GO!!!!! Read this for top grades I guarantee 🙏

I do CCEA, which covers prose instead of AQA which covers Shakespeare and 19th century but still relevant. CCEA is italics, AQA is bold

ok gang we have 24 hours to the most incoherent yapsesh we have every devised. To get top marks we gotta use PRETZL!!!! its not only useful for lit its also yummy 🥹

Point

Do not include quotes or methods! (unless CCEA unseen prose) You should include the key term of the question in this sentence. If "how far Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a strong female character in this conversation" was the question, then "strong female character" is the key term. You do not need to always be in favour of one side - you can give both sides.

For AQA, this covers the targets of "identifying the theme and distinguishing between themes; supporting a point of view by referring to evidence in the text; recognising the possibility of and evaluating different responses to a text;", and covers AO1. For CCEA, it covers the targets of "Persuasive, coherent answer to the question set; Evaluative response; sustained argument", and covers AO1.

BAD: "Shakespeare shows Lady Macbeth as being strong by using violent imagery."

GOOD: "Shakespeare shows Lady Macbeth as being a strong female character by her conviction to killing the king."

Reference

This section is a little weird. You just gotta explain the scene/chapter, and the events leading up to your quote. You can do this in a separate sentence, or as a part of the sentence for the quote.

For AQA, this covers the targets of "exploring aspects of plot, characterisation, events and settings; explaining motivation, sequence of events, and the relationship between actions or events", and covers AO1. For CCEA, it covers the targets of "selecting and evaluating relevant textual detail to illustrate and support interpretations", and covers AO1.

BAD: "In the beginning, Lady Macbeth is talking to Macbeth about killing the king, and she says..."

GOOD: "In Act 2, Lady Macbeth is criticising Macbeth for going against his word, with her propsing that if she promised, she would..."

Evidence

It's a quote. Make sure it's accurate - your examiner will know!

For AQA, this covers the targets of "supporting a point of view by referring to evidence in the text", and covers AO1. For CCEA, this covers the targets of "select and evaluate relevant textual detail to illustrate and support interpretations", and covers AO1.

Technique

Put your literary technique here, and explain how it has been used for effect. If you run out of ideas, then you might be able to get away with dialogue or narration (Especially Of Mice And Men - it's dialogue heavy)

For AQA, this covers the targets of "recognising the possibility of and evaluating different responses to a text; making an informed personal response that derives from analysis and evaluation of the text; evaluation of a writer’s choice of vocabulary, grammatical and structural features: analysing and evaluating how language, structure, form and presentation contribute to quality and impact; using linguistic and literary terminology for such evaluation", and covers AO2. For CCEA, it covers the targets of "evaluative response; Assured interpretation of content; Developed discussion on the effects of structure, form, writer’s techniques and use of language; Analysis of the writer’s style using appropriate critical terminology," and covers AO1, and AO2.

BAD: "This use of dialogue shows that Lady Macbeth would kill her child if she said so."

Good: "This use of violent imagery contrasts the protective nature expected of women in Shakespearian society, and shows the great lengths she will take for her ambition."

Zoom In

Zooming in onto a particular word or phrase, especially if you can get another technique, can show the examiner that you can go beyond surface level analyses. It is very similar to the technique section of PRETZL, but instead you give a very specific analysis of a very specific part of the text.

For AQA, this covers the targets of "evaluation of a writer’s choice of vocabulary, grammatical and structural features: analysing and evaluating how language, structure, form and presentation contribute to quality and impact; using linguistic and literary terminology for such evaluation; identifying the theme and distinguishing between themes;distinguishing between what is stated explicitly and what is implied; recognising the possibility of and evaluating different responses to a text; making an informed personal response that derives from analysis and evaluation of the text," and covers A02. For CCEA, it covers the targets of "evaluative response; Assured interpretation of content; Developed discussion on the effects of structure, form, writer’s techniques and use of language; Analysis of the writer’s style using appropriate critical terminology," and covers AO1, and AO2.

BAD: "The phrase 'dashed the brains out' shows that she would have violently killed her son"

GOOD: "In particular, the phrase 'plucked my nipple' implies that this action would be casual for her, highlighting how far the evil spirits she had called upon have corrupted her."

Link

The link shows that your analysis is actually relevant to the question. If needed, you can add context here (For Paper One you do not need context. For poetry in Paper Two you do need context). You should include the key term of the question.

For AQA, this covers the targets of "identifying the theme and distinguishing between themes; supporting a point of view by referring to evidence in the text; using understanding of writers’ social, historical and cultural contexts to inform evaluation; making an informed personal response that derives from analysis and evaluation of the text," and covers AO1. For CCEA, this covers the targets of "respond to texts critically and imaginatively; evaluative response; Assured interpretation of content," and covers AO1.

BAD: "The way she would kill her child, which was frowned upon in Shakespearian society, shows that she is a strong character"

GOOD: "In Shakespearian society, infanticide was commonly connotated with witchcraft. To show Lady Macbeth threatening to commit this shows her firm conviction, and presents her as a strong female character.

Extra tips:

  • For Unseen Prose, you should not stick to PRETZL, as you will not have enough information of the text to create a detailed paragraph. Your analyses should be more like English Language, with PEE chains.
  • Structures can sometimes limit your analysis if applied too strictly. An AQA mark scheme said "... [a rigid structure] rapidly becomes very limiting for some students who repeatedly follow the same approach to each paragraph rather than exploring the text and developing their ideas." (thanks u/Efficient_Leading_25
  • Use more than 'show'! You can use words like suggest, express, connote, imply, signify, embody, represent, indicate, reveal, display, communicate, expose, demonstrate, etc. Using different words in different contexts can boost AO1, and AO2 marks by showing a better analysis.
  • Some quotes can be relevant for certain characters, or themes, even when the question asks about a different one. For example, quotes from Slim at the end of the story can be used for a paragraph about George.
