🚛 Context

I’m a complete beginner to any kind of fishing, practicing solo while working as an HGV driver in Scotland. I aim to fish opportunistically during delivery routes, mainly around:

  • Glasgow / Greenock / Clyde coast
  • Ayrshire / south-west Scotland
  • occasional west coast runs
  • entire east coast up to inverness

Target species:

  • Pollachius pollachius

I’m still learning and testing what works in real conditions from shore (rocks, piers, harbours).

🧊 Current Handling System (very simple setup)

🎣 1. Capture & kill

  • shore-caught fish
  • immediate kill when possible (basic method depending on situation)

🩸 2. Bleeding approach

  • usually tail cut (caudal bleed) instead of gill cutting
  • sometimes bleeding is delayed 2–6 hours due to work schedule
  • fish is always stored immediately after catch

❄️ 3. Storage

  • fish placed in sealed food-grade plastic bags (no boxes or containers)
  • immediately transferred to truck refrigerated cargo area at 1–4°C
  • no fish handling or storage in cab (no cooling, hygiene limitations)

⏱️ Operational reality

  • everything is done during short stops on delivery routes
  • priority is:
    • hygiene
    • no contamination in vehicle
    • speed and simplicity
  • gear is kept minimal and compact

❓ Questions for feedback

🩸 Bleeding quality

  1. Is tail bleeding enough compared to gill bleeding for species like pollack?
  2. How much does delayed bleeding (2–6 hours) affect:
    • taste
    • texture
    • shelf life if fish is immediately chilled at 1–4°C?

❄️ Cold chain

  1. Does immediate refrigeration at 1–4°C compensate for delayed bleeding?
  2. At what delay does quality drop become clearly noticeable (not safety-related)?

🧼 Hygiene / storage method

  1. Are sealed food-grade plastic bags (no containers) acceptable for short-term fish storage in a refrigerated vehicle?
  2. Best practices to avoid:
    • leakage
    • smell contamination
    • cross-contamination in a food transport environment?

⚖️ Legal (UK / Scotland)

  1. Any legal issues with:
    • transporting personally caught fish in a commercial food delivery truck (separately sealed and refrigerated)?
    • bleeding/processing fish outside licensed facilities?
  2. Any regulations I should be aware of regarding wild-caught fish in a mixed-use transport environment?

🧠 Learning / optimisation

  1. Does this approach look closer to:
    • acceptable recreational beginner practice
    • or something approaching commercial handling standards?
  2. What is the simplest upgrade that would most improve quality or compliance without adding bulky gear?

🧠 Summary

Beginner shore fishing during HGV routes with:

  • minimal compact gear
  • tail bleeding (sometimes delayed)
  • sealed bag storage
  • immediate refrigeration at 1–4°C in truck cargo area

Goal is to understand:

  • impact of delayed bleeding
  • food quality preservation
  • hygiene and legal considerations
  • and how to improve this setup safely and realistically

also rod/reel recomendation will be appreciated. we dont want to spend a lot initialy. we gonna test to see if its working and if we like whole idea
