How do you figure out if a piece of greenwood is still usable?

I’m still new to the hobby, and havent worked with an actual piece of tree before. My previous pieces were pre-cut spoon blanks.
But I got a little log from the tree-scaping crew, it is probably some type of maple. I left it outside, in record heat, for about 10 days.
But it already has some visible cracks on the end.
Is it still usable? How do you figure out how far it has dried out already, before sinking a lot of time into the piece?
I’ve started roughing it out with a cheap axe I sharpened.

Spooncarving is like crack, unless it cracks…

No point in continuing this spoon.. there is a crack almost all the way through…
Should have stopped as soon as i saw it, but it is quite addictive!

Holiday kit

I’m trying to optimize a little kit i can bring with my on trips.
This little case, originally meant for a nintendo switch seems like a nice size.
I’ve stuffed in:
- Flexcut carving jack (and its leather sheath)
- Opinel nr 8 (i might switch that to my main knife, Flexcut kn12)
- slipstrop for the knife and its gauges
- leather strop
- stropping crayon
- finger guard
- glove (only left hand)
- pencil with eraser
- some bandaids
- some wood

What would your go bag look like?

All I’m definitely missing is talent, but i’ll try to brute force it. Or perhaps I will find divine inspiration somewhere under the sun?

Nice haul!

Most hobbies involve pretty expensive toys, so I cant really ask for them as birthday gifts. Opinels are more budget friendly. So I got everything my heart desires!
A #6, #7 & #8 carbon to play around with. And a picnic set for my on-the-go lunch, including an extra #8 inox, so you can actually use a fork AND knife at the same time

Small mites / arachnids crawling on my monitor & desk

Hi,
I am a computer programmer, so I know a bug when I see one.
But these creepy crawlers are infesting my attic workarea.
I'm catching a dozen of them each day, but i'm curious what they can be.
(also, how i can get rid of them)

I think they are coming from the cracks in the wall/ceiling.
There might be a birds nestling in the cavitywall or under the rooftiles

Visible all during the day, just crawling around on my monitor / desk.
I've made some photos with a cheap USB microscope, their bodies appear to be slightly less than 1mm long

Me, Disco Dave, and the rest of the beasties live in the Netherlands.

Anyone any idea?
