Feedback plz

Interested in feedback on these concept designs. I think I'll shorten them a bit for better proportions. Pawn, rook, knight, bishop and king left to right.

First -> latest piece

Picked up the whittling hobby in january this year and been lurking on these subs since, seeing all of you making some seriously beautiful art!

Wanted to post some of mine:) From left is the very first one I did. Since then been watching some tutorials and learned alot. For every new piece I make I find a ‘flaw’ in and old one, and I take that as a sign im developing some more understanding of the hobby:)

Happy to be a part of this club and love seeing your work! Hope even more people will post their pieces 🙋‍♂️

*Warning* don’t look if sensitive to cuts

I had my first accident this evening whilst whittling, as a newbie it’s a stern reminder to not try to run before you can walk, I took the gloves off because the ones I had just seems to restrict my hand too much.

Anyway heres the photo, I work on building sites so my partners told me it may need glued or stitched, I’m not sure but for now it just has a plaster 👀🤷‍♂️

Stupid idea N°X proof of concept: pocket chess set - pawn

Sometimes it feels like making a chess set is among these "everyone has to do one" projects in the community. But I'm stupid so I had to make it harder for myself.

Carved out of a bamboo barbecue skewer (3mm diameter) with a neodium magnet (2mm diameter) inserted in the base so it could be reasonably stable on a base including a hidden steel sheet.

Little spoon i finished yesterday

Maple Spoon i carved as a gift for my stepfather. Made it in multiple sessions whenever i was sitting at my favourite spot by the river. Hope you guys like it, its size is debatable but i gifted him a tiny spoon before so now i want to slowly work my way up progressively. Also the first spoon i did, apart from the little one

A few random whittles (only 1st one is NSFW)

Pics 1-2: yup, it’s what it looks like. Played around with anatomy, no shame in my game lol

Pics 4-6: a little mushroom house. I forgot to sand before painting, and it accidentally fell over while the sealant was drying. Oh well, figured I’d share mistakes and all.

Pics 7-8: whittled a face out of a random piece of practice wood.

Salty Fisherman with custom clothes (week 3 progress)

Third week into whittling journey! (whittled every single day so far)

This is also my third "Salty Fisherman" based on the tutorial by Linker on YouTube.

I found a bunch of fisherman images and used that to sketch out some clothing ideas. My favourite was the blue dungarees, black jumper and orange gloves.

I struggled with the dungaree clips and beanie. But very happy with the carved out part when the dungarees meet the jumper at the waist. Also loving applying colour theory when painting them! 🥰🎨

Also love the zigzag hair on the back.

Moving onto scarecrows next. Looking forward to the challenge of carving straw texture.

Whittled succulent plants

I carved a bunch of these little succulents cactus from David young’s book “Whittling On the Go”

Today’s episode of The Modern Woodcarver Podcast I got the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with David about his journey in wood carving, how he developed his style and creating his book. I had a lot of fun speaking with him about his journey!

I will leave the link below for anyone who is interested in checking it out!

When the topic of the ever important strop comes up (about all the time), I see plenty of people recommending big brand made strops at prices that give me a heart attack. So here is a handmade strop that cost me a whooping ... 3-4€ maybe?

Wood is a board of pine from a bed that was laying in the street because some was throwing it away. Cost nothing and the board has proved useful for a number of small practical projects (it is awful for carving tho). Cut to size with the coping saw from the supermarket for my woodcarving projects.
Leather is a cowhide leather belt back bought at a second hand shop for 2€. It's pretty hard leather and does the job well, I just had to cut it to length with my woodcarving blades.
Leather strips are glued to the wood with basic cheap superglue from the supermarket. Maybe 1€ worth of glue?
Anti-slip pads are from the supermarket too and represent maybe another 1€? The glue on them being quite weak and wanting to adjust the individual heights to make sure the whole was stable I made them small recesses with my woodcarving tools.

I made it with two leather strips because I like to use two compounds but it can absolutely be made with just one strip for green compound only. The brown compound is coarser than the green one and makes removing burr and fixing minor damage a bit faster. The white one is finer than green compound and makes for some very fine edges. Got them as a pack in the hardware store and they are big enough that they'll be enough for a lifetime if I don't use them for anything else. Obviously the brown and white marks on the wood are just reminders of which compound is where for when they're both gonna be black from stropping.

As you can see in the last pic it allows to reach hair whittling no problem although I could achieve about the same result with a free strip of leather (not glued to any backing) and green compound (it does need to sit on a hard, flat surface like the surface of a desk while honing most blades nonetheless).

(Compound is better spread than the pic shows, it's mostly a matter of reflection and I added a tiny bit more in some areas but that's about the quantity you want.)
(If you use more than one compound, clean your blade before moving from one to the next so you don't contaminate a finer compound with coarser grains.)
