it’s been about 4 hours and i have made little progress, i’ve made a lot of mistakes as well. i’m following a simple fox tutorial on youtube, and the process is nothing like the video. i’ve tried sharpening the knives, but it didn’t make much of a difference. i bought the cheapest kit on amazon i could find because i wanted to see whether or not i’d enjoy it, i do like the process but i don’t like that i don’t have an end product. the wood is super hard to carve, so should i buy new knives that are sharper?
Hope you like them.
Started whittling 2 months ago with a cutter, doing that greenman (for countless hours)... It's been a fun and relaxing hobby so far!
Didn't lose a finger yet 😄
I want to start doing more detailed figures, so give me some inspiration, please!
Whittled this seahorse and was unsure of how to add the rib texture. In the end I used a gouge and it looks a mess now.
I was proud of myself carving the overall shape of the seahorse and feel like ive ruined it with those stupid rib things.
Any ideas to make it look less of a mess?
My first and second rodeos
This is my first carve. Started with beavercraft knives but they were incredibly dull even after stropping. Purchase the flexcut 3 piece set which was better.
Took months off for reasons and finally had time to come back and do some proper whittling. Didn't know what to carve first so back to an oldie with a twist.
Ball in a woven cage.
That I then decided to paint inside and outside for some reason 😅
Anyway, looks kinda funky so here it is
I have a beaver craft knife that I got in a set with a hook knife and gouge. I also bought a leather strop and compound as I read before buying that I would need this. I have been using the strop but I think my knife isn't as sharp as it could be, definitely isn't shaving hairs off my arm.
I think that I'm just not stropping right and I don't live near somewhere to ask for in person advice to really understand how to do it. Is there a beginner friendly way for me to get my knife sharper?
Also I'm low-key super pumped with this little fish, it probably took my close to two hours which is another reason I think my knife isn't sharp enough haha
I really want to carve a couple dogs or more. My granddaughters have asked me for a weenier dog and the younger doesn’t care she just wants a dog. I don’t see much info on carving dogs. Any direction to point me ??
It's not much but I'm already pretty proud of this
6 1/2" tall. Basswood finished with linseed oil.
I've just taken up whittling and my first project is a comfort bird. It's a very intriguing and relaxing journey so far, but I'm not really sure how to go about giving a proper shape to the head.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
