A couple of whales 🐳, first time whittling pear tree wood 🍐

I wanted to try a new type of wood for some time. Apart from the random branches I found out there, I mostly used basswood. My wife gifted me some pear wood which has a beautiful pink/brown/red color, very fine and uniform grain. Much harder to carve than the basswood but it allowed for much more precise cuts.

For the whales, I followed the great guide from Doug Linker. As usual my carvings tend to be quite chunky and fat 🙈.

My son's (7) first pieces 🐻

We gifted him a kid friendly knife a few months back. Until these two, he was hacking at branches practicing a few cuts that I taught him but that was it 🪵🔪.

After I whittled a bear (at least what ended up to be a bear), he wanted to gift one of his own for his mother 🤩.

He used a pencil to highlight the place that I had to burn as he is way too young to use a hot soldering iron.

Whittled failed somewhat successfully

I started trying to do a standing meerkat but completely messed up the proportions and ended up with a chunky one with a massive head.

That's when my son said: "that's a cute bear". That's right son, exactly the thing I was whittling 🙈.

A smooth criminal 😺

With the light of the flash, it looks like I just caught it eating the family hamster at night 😺🐹.

Whittled little guy 🗡️🪵

One of these little guys recently decided that my attic would make the perfect new home. This is my small souvenir from his visit.

I gave it another shot with a more details. I also tested a paint job, what do you prefer, with or without paint?
