Spatiotemporal distribution of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in gill filterable fish food webs of European freshwater lakes and ponds: a systematic review

(1)   high-latitude, pelagic niche, lowland waterbodies during spring are identified as omega-3 LC-PUFA “hotspots” but progressively deteriorating over the last decades due to global change.

(2)   Zoobenthos exhibit stable ARA and EPA concentrations across latitudes but lower DHA levels than zooplankton. Zooplankton DHA content increases with latitude.

(3)   an optimum organic carbon load (8–10 mg DOC/ L) and reduced phosphorus–driven eutrophication (< 20 µg TP/ L) are needed for maximized EPA (> 20 µg/ g dry matter, DM) and DHA (> 10 µg/ g DM) concentrations.

(4)   Temporal trends indicate a decline in DHA and EPA in highland zooplankton over recent decades, likely influenced by climate change, while eutrophication-driven shifts contribute to seasonal DHA reductions in lowland lakes.

Aquaculture Europe 2026

[For Attendees of Aquaculture Europe conference, by European Aquaculture Society] Please reserve the last day and last block of Aquaculture Europe 2026 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. 01st October - 14:00-17:30 - back to back presentations on ponds!

Session name: "Nature-based solutions & Regenerative Farming".

Research presented will be from Czechia, France, Germany, Hungary and Poland participating in this session! We look forward to seeing you.

Sorry that it is on the last day, but if you are staying anyway, we promise it to be a blockbuster series of oral presentations you can sit back, relax, and "Binge watch".

New grant - INTERREG EUROPE VA AT-CZ “CARMA” - ATCZ00278

The pond fish nutrition group has a new grant! INTERREG AT-CZ project called "CARMA". Low trophic level "C1 gas protein". That is Methanogenic bacteria inspired from European fishponds, wastewater treatment and grown on industrial C1 gas effluents.

Mitigating greenhouse gas to useful amino acids supplements for aquafeed - which is anyway part of the natural food chain in ponds. Special bioreactors to avoid Sulphur-limitation/ Methionine deficiency and possibly fortified with priority minerals (such as Selenium) to improve competitiveness.

Open to do joint meeting/ workshop, data and biomass exchange? We are open to do clustering with other sucessful EU/ ERDF/ INTERREG/ H2020 grants having a similar focus. Subscribe via scanning the QR code to receive updates and contact for clustering ( kroy@frov.jcu.cz / sabine.spiess@k1-met.com).

A joint project by: Fakulta rybářství a ochrany vod JU / K1-MET GmbH / Johannes Kepler Universität Linz / Mendel University in Brno

Funded by: Interreg Europe VA Austria-Czechia, European Commission European Regional Development Fund. Project ID: ATCZ00278.
