I have started playing with the in-game world map shrunk to such a small window I can't use it to habitually orient myself. (I can restore it to regular size when I actually need it, e.g. when an NPC has marked something on the map and that's all the direction I get.)

This has worked really well off Vardenfell, where I genuinely don't know what the land looks like beyond broad strokes. It forces me to be really observant to remember the way between things, and listen closely to directions. I can't take the road that goes in the general right direction, so I have to read signs instead.

It would be awesome if I could start off a new character tossed into a random town/settlement, and be forced to figure out where I am and how to find my way around from there.
