I take it all back, the MovinkPad Pro 14, using Sunshine and Moonlight instead of the Instant Pen Display beta, becomes a perfectly usable, wireless, Cintiq-like device, even for 3D work
**edit. ahh. it looks like pressure sensitivity doesn't work using Moonlight 🤦♂️ - I didn't notice this when testing Blender**
took a little setting up, but it's pretty sweet now. Hover and side button functionality now close enough to a Cintiq experience. Using Blender in Instant Pen Display was completely unusable without the hover and use of side buttons.
Installed Sunshine on my Mac, Moonlight on the MovinkPad Pro, connected it up. Moonlight connects wirelessly so no need for a wired usb-c connection. Some setting tweaks here and there, including lowering bitrate, framerate and resolution to reduce lagginess.
the goal or hope was to be able to use the Movink with a Mac mini without any other peripherals, for when travelling. With either Instant Pen Display or Sunshine set to log in at startup, you can manage a clunky blind log in, but it works fine, so I didn't need to buy a 2nd mini monitor. I've set up Internet Sharing on my Mac, so the Movink can connect to the Mac mini directly without an internet connection, so I didn't need to buy a mini router, and am not reliant on connecting to wi-fi.
I was ready to return the 14 and was looking into the 13, and even had feedback from Wacom's customer support confirming this was the right way to go for true pen display functionality. Glad I didn't! It's not a perfect Cintiq equivalent, I'll still use my Cintiq at home, but for me it's now easily close enough for a light mobile setup.
PS pretty sure Wacom's Instant Pen Display will be able to do all this in time.

<don't blame it on the sunshine, don't blame it on the moonlight,
blame it on the Movink (Instant Pen Display (Beta))>
did I get the wrong Movink for mobile Blender work? Struggling with the MovinkPad Pro 14 as a pen display, should I have got the 13??
<SOLVED>
I currently have a Cintiq 32 and a 16 pro.. wanted to upgrade the 16 to something lighter.. was holding out as neither the 13 or 14 didn't quite seem like the thing .. got overexcited when the Art Pen 2 was announced, bought it, then realised, it wouldn't work with my 32, the. after some weak googling and ai chats I took the plunge on the 14, I figured I could work my way around the issues / limitations, for something a third of the weight..
mostly great, and fine for painting in pen display mode.. but just tried Blender, and not being able to hover makes the most simple of actions, say moving some vertices, impossible with the pen. am I doing something wrong?
this reminds me of the clunky nightmare trying to get the iPad Pro to work with a Mac with Astropad and Duet back in 2017 😩
Should I consider the 13? I'm presuming that should be a more cintiq experience?? I got swayed but the idea of having a pen displays that is also a tablet, but don't really need the tablet functionality tbh
but maybe my first instinct to hold out and wait to see what model gets released next was the right one, and I probably need to accept lugging the 16 pro for another year or two :|
Covenant 2 - part 1 - Primus and Unicron
Covenant 2
At the end/in the beginning the Universe had distilled itself down to its base metals, all matter reduced into two celestial bodies, suspended in a void of nothing.
One embodied Light and Order, the other Darkness and Chaos.
The Creation Matrix and The Matrix of Destruction.
Primus and Unicron.
They battled across the astral plane. Chaos’ fury grew so great that all was threatened with Darkness and Entropy. To preserve primordial order, Primus used the last of her power to banish Unicron into the furthest reaches of existence.
Diminished, she went into hiding, dividing herself into thirteen worlds, placing upon each a manifestation of herself as its Guardian Deity:
