NYC gym & prices

NYC gym & prices

Hi NYC Reddit! Moving to NYC next month and I wanted to see how the gym ecosystem works there. I see commercial gyms like Planet Fitness charging their usual 20-30$ and was surprised to see crunch too (which will likely be the winner if i don’t find anything else).

I am working right next to the Grand Central and was wondering if anyone knows of other gyms that are good especially around there or Marble Hill and if they are 24/7. I think my budget would be 70$ at most.

Unfortunately I am not wealthy enough to afford Equinox (300-400$ for a gym is crazyy lol).

Info on taking over a lease

New to NYC I am looking at a beautiful spot here and looking to work something out with the current person living there about taking over his lease, he is on board. What do I/and he need to do, what is required? How long are the notices? Do we need a broker (his is trying to charge a 4.5k fee). Etc

Sorry super new to this topic and figured i would ask, since the people of reddit (although not always nice) know their shit especially when already been through it.

Transport question

I (25F) am likely moving to Marble Hill, but I am worried that I will not be able to get to my home if I stay out past 1am. Does anyone know how to mitigate that (aside from not staying out past that time which is always the alternative)?

I assume Grand Station only runs until a certain time. I am not a NYC local so any help or tips would be appreciated.

26F, 760 credit score, 4 yr rent history moving to NYC June :)

Hello! My name is Anna, I will be moving to NYC in June. I got a new job and looking for a place to stay.

!! Please if you know anyone moving out, vacant apartments, unlisted properties being renovated or are possibly moving out yourself, kindly help a gal out.

I have a 760 credit score, I have an offer letter I can provide. I have been at my current apartment for 4 years, always pay on time, treat the place with respect and love my previous landlord.

I am searching for a 1/1 & studio (preferred even if far)
or female roommate/s
or a sublet (5-6 months)

Budget is 2-2.3k
Willing to look at all locations.

I do not smoke and do not have pets.
I can provide all documentation necessary & have my first month & deposit.
I am clean and organized, I generally keep to myself but have been told I am very easy to get along with.
I love making art and being physically active. I will be working mon-thu and wfh fridays.

I know I am being hopeful with the 1/1 & studio but yet I press on and refuse to lose hope.
I am quite serious about it and do have my paperwork ready.

I am moving to NYC within the next month for a new job. I was (and still am) not well educated on the topic of sublets and finding roommates since I have been on my own lease in FL for 4 years now.

The original plan was to view apartments over a weekend and signing a lease on the spot but it seems with my budget 1.8-2k there is nothing available so the corrected plan would be to live in a sublet for 3-5 months and look while in NYC.

I would like to find some answers to these questions:

- What does the process look like for finding a sublet, I know there seems to be a big community for that on Reddit, I am also assuming facebook marketplace? Is there a way to make sure I will not get scammed?

- What documents do I need? How does the payment system works?

- I am assuming subletting will come with the original roommates that share the place, is that a good assumption? How can I vet my potential roommates? (Heard awful things)

- Does subletting even happen for longer than 2-3 months? I am possibly looking to stay for 5-6 months as I am looking for something for a year lease. Or would I have to hop around?

- Is there a way for me to possibly find a great place (not sublet) with a roommate but not for a full year?

I am looking to move around June 1st (can you move in June 15th tho for example?)

Anyways I appreciate the awesome people on Reddit! This would be my official second post ever, lots of knowledge to share.

I would love to hear some experiences from people who have been/ are in my situation and how you went about handling it.

I got an offer letter at a new job in NYC. Yearly is 80k, I am in florida currently.
I am looking for a 1.8-2k rental 1/1, studio, shoebox is fine. I am a female (short as well lol) so I want something on the area that atleast won’t get me stabbed, I work in the center (100 ave) so I want to get closer to a metro or some sort of transportation method. I am okay with a commute. I have a 760 credit score and 4 years of flawless rent (will get my landlord to have a reference letter).
My job begins July 6th and I am looking to move in June (either 1 or mid June whatever tbh).

I know about streeteasy, I know about having all my paperwork (ID, credit report, tax documents, offer letter, 2 months of banking info, checkbook to sign right away).

My main problems are:

- i am currently still working and can only go there on a weekend. I am planning to go fri-sun so i can use Friday to familiarize myself with how to use the subways and metros, then see as many bookings as possible on Saturday and Sunday. But i am afraid that will not be enough time and it will be crazy expensive coming another weekend (original plan) considering flights are 500$ rn
- I do have 4k for the first months and deposit, i am willing to budge and add extra 1.5 so i dont get outbidded but only if its worth it.
- 2k rent budget (i am unable to compromise on getting a roommate atm) while hopefully having a laundry unit in the building and close (or atleast ish) to transport

I really need help and advice on:

- contacting landlords/realtors to book to see apartments
- what times are best, which areas should I narrow it down (not sure if its even possible to look in Queens AND Brooklyn in one day)
- traveling around the city on such short notice with no experience in nyc
- what would i likely have to compromise on

I was told to not look to early, filter through most recent, i am moving in season so availability should be fine but competition will be FIERCE. I know most apartments will sign within 48 hours of posting (atleast that is what ive been seeing).

Please help a gal out, I am genuinely actually loosing my mind.
Any advice will help especially from people who were/are in similar positions.

Edit: NYC rent situation is crazy my god!

Will change strategies, it seems looking for a sublet with a roommate for a few months will be the best move while I grind to find an opening somewhere I would sign a yearly with. Would love any advice/tips on subletting, as a Floridian I am SEVERELY uneducated on that! Thanks people of Reddit !!
Onwards and upwards :))
