Cheap Ukulele Hacks

Just for fun, here are a few hacks I’ve used. I have more than ten ukuleles and I’m a preschool teacher, so I have one I just leave at one of my schools. Cheap $15 Ali Express soprano.

Problem is, it came with horrible intonation, and I narrowed it down to an improperly trimmed fretboard. Solution I’ve been using for a year without any negative effect, which now provides near perfect intonation: A toothpick at the nut.

I also have a song I like to play in D Major. No capo? No problem.

Does anyone else have any little low-budget (or no-budget) hacks they use?

Has anyone else tried the toothpick trick?

So I bought an A16 Mini, hoping I could use it as a media player, knowing it would be as slow as hell and battery life would be abysmal. But for $25 what the hell right?

It’s absolutely adorable. I can sideload old Apple Music and download lossless files.

Unfortunately the phone lacks USB out. The USB port seems to be exclusively for charging.

Is there a 3” Android with USB audio and enough USB power output to connect a DAC?

I like the Sony NW-A306 but that thing is $300! And it’s still larger than I would want.

I bought a 7th Gen iPod Touch (for a steal on PinDuoDuo) and I can’t get my audio adapters to work.

I bought a premium Lightning to USB Type C cable to connect to my DAC and it doesn’t recognize it as headphones.

I also tried using a basic Lightning to 3.5mm dongle. No dice.

Is there something I’m doing wrong?

Also, I know I have the latest iOS (15.8.7) but if I go to Software Update, I get the message “Unable to Check for Update” instead of a message that I have the most current version. Should I be concerned? I’m worried because this is a China refurb and possibly a retail floor unit.
