ELI5: Why do airplane engines sound incredibly loud during takeoff but get so much quieter once you are cruising?
Whenever I fly, the engines sound absolutely deafening while we are speeding down the runway and lifting off. Once we reach cruising altitude, they quiet down to a steady, low hum.
I know the plane needs more power to lift a heavy load off the ground, but is engine power the only reason for the huge difference in volume? Does the altitude, air pressure, or cabin insulation play a role in making it so quiet up there?
