First Shot Slow - Data Collection

Hi all, I see this topic brought up and I want to get to the bottom of it so let’s collect some data together to see if we can find a common denominator.

Grinder: Eureka Mignon Zero 55mm
Coffee: Medium roast
Suggestions used: turned off fast pre-heat, let machine heat up for an hour before use, flush the machine for 10 seconds before use, portafilter inserted during heat up and flush
Result: First shot still pulls much slower

Do you oil your wood?

I have seen several photos of the wooden knobs and especially the portafilter handle that look worn. The portafilter handle obviously gets used a lot and people may wash it.

I’m curious if people use food grade mineral oil — ie, what’s used on cutting boards — to recondition the wood knobs and portafilter handle on the Move.

Drip tray grid specs

Does anyone have detailed specs on the drip tray grid? The part number is P2168.1.

Context: I'm trying to order a custom-made metal drip tray that has a carved out holder for my scale. I could clumsily measure it myself, but a spec would be more precise. Thanks.

Solution for the holes on the water tank

Hey, I just came up with a quick solution for the holes on the water tank. I was covering them with a latte glass, but I needed somewhere to store a magnet to remove my puck screens. I came up with the idea to turn a walnut magnet that kind of matches the rest of the accents on the machine. I could also store it on the side or front of the machine because it’s magnetic. Made on my lathe in about 10 mins as proof of concept. I finished this with oil, but I might use a water-based poly to get a closer match to the factory finish if I decide to keep this.

I don’t know if I like how it looks, but I thought it was a creative solution and wanted to share.

Let me know what you think before I make another one for the other side.

What's your backflush routine?

Do you backflush with water every day after you're done using the machine? Or do you only backflush with detergent periodically? What interval do you use for detergent backflushing?

Move with newest firmware has big temperature swings on the display

So after purchasing a Move and owning it for two months, I convinced Clive to send me a replacement (multiple broken components; long story). The new one has new firmware and a really strange issue—the temperature on the display swings quite wildly and won’t stay steady.

Perhaps it’s a result of the new firmware and the “Coffee Offset Correction” feature, which I don’t remember from my previous machine (though the offset might have been there)?

The machine arrived yesterday and I set it up this afternoon. After doing the initial setup flushes, I turned it back on to pull its first shot.

The warmup should take 15 minutes or so, so when I noticed that the temp was fluctuating so much after 5 minutes I wasn’t concerned. It was, however, different from how the other machine (with older firmware) functioned—that one would just slowly creep up to the set temp, not go above and below over and over again.

After about 30 minutes, it did seem that my set temp (204°) was now the baseline for the fluctuation. I figured that was good. However, it did still continue to fluctuate by as much as 4-5° above that set temp.

I noticed that this firmware has a feature called Coffee Offset Correction. Its default setting is 0°, which went to -4°F when I switched to Fahrenheit.

Given that the fluctuation was roughly 4°, is that the explanation for the fluctuation in the display? Or is this a known sign of something that might be wrong?

Here are two videos showing what’s happening—the first is after 5 minutes (so still warming up), the second is after 30 minutes:

What do we think? Normal with the new firmware, or is this second machine going back, too?

So excited!

Thrilled to get this new set up in place. Lots of learning ahead as I get the burrs seasoned - frothing milk will be the biggest journey!

First shot of the day significantly slow

Have been using my move for a week now and everything is great apart from shot time consistency, which seems to be a recurring problem with this machine across many users.

In my case; I am seeing significantly long time for my first shot of the day (usually around 10-11 am). And the weird thing is that time is not changing even with making the grinder grind coarser. So, even after 3 markings coarser on my philos, my espresso vivace beans are running around 60 seconds to produce 22ml from a 21 gram dose. The espresso tastes amazing though, so I guess I shouldn't complain, but the snob in me is trying to figure out what's going on.

Thoughts?

36 oz of coffee later, I think I’m close to a good shot

Just got my machine delivered on Wednesday. Spent the last couple of days trying to get everything dialed in. That Eureka Libra grinder is new, and the other one is for decaf. 18.5g on the grinder, it is still a little bit inconsistent and I’m getting ~18-18.3 and double checking every shot on a scale. 5 second pre infusion, 26g total shot time, 9-10 bar on the pressure gauge. Been playing with the grind size, and even the slightest adjustment seems to change the outcome pretty significantly.

I’m noticing a lot of shot to shot variation, even with the dose and grind size consistent. Could it be my tamp pressure? WDT every shot and using spring loaded tamper. Do I just need to keep messing with things until it works? That’s the only other variable I can think of, I got this new tamper. Sometimes I will get 20 g output, sometimes 45 g.

Any tips for getting dialed in?

Note: knock box full of failures.

Shower Holder

I recently bought a new shower holder (shown at the bottom of the attached pictures) for my Move because the original one (shown at the top) looked a little worn out.

If you look at the sides that face the group head when installed (second picture), you’ll see a deep notch on the new plate. The original only has a small notch.

As a result, the new plate isn’t sealed properly because the sealing ring (number 9 in the exploded view) can’t close this gap.

If you Google a shower holder for the Move, you’ll also find a "new" version with 8 holes and a height of 10.5 mm (https://www.kaffeenudel.de/Profitec-Duschplattenhalter-H105mm-8-Loecher). The original has 6 holes and is 7.5 mm high.

I’d like to test the version with 8 holes, but wouldn't it actually stick out 3 mm further into the basket?

Which version do you have on your Move?

Heat up time - pleasant surprise?

I see the machine quoted in the 8-10 minute range to heat up using the “fast heat up” mode, and around 15 minutes without. I disabled fast heat up, because I don’t wish to continuously overheat the machine and need to purge in order to get to the 200 brew temp.

What I’ve consistently seen, is my machine gets to temp in about 6 minutes from a cold start. I’ve timed it with a stopwatch several times, and I’m getting the same result. I’m not complaining, I’m just curious if anyone else is noticing the machine gets up to temp much faster than expected.
