Imo, he's kinda overrated todays.

I wanna talk about COTE today. Even though I might look like a guy in this sub who wanks Death Note and downplays COTE (I actually think my scaling is fair), that doesn't mean I hate the series. I've loved COTE since the moment I picked it up. There was even a time I was fully caught up and following it religiously; I still do, just not as much as before. Anyway, one of the biggest reasons I loved COTE was because the core concept goes insanely hard. Taking a near-emotionless MC, dropping him into the worst class of a god-tier school that everyone in this server would dream of attending, and following his 3-year school life—plus the fact that the MC is hiding a ton of secrets—was just super engaging. Ayanokoji was a character I fucked with from the very beginning. Honestly, he felt so refreshing. When you consider how most anime MCs are either overly energetic or hyper-emotional, Koji was incredibly original, and he had some top-tier monologues on top of it.

​Now, let's talk about my take on the series from an SCD perspective. If you ask me, the author cooked in Year 1. His feats in the Zodiac Exam and the Island Exam were genuinely impressive. But imo, the author started fumbling the series in Y2. It turned way too much into a harem bait. Normally, I wouldn’t complain about an MC having 2 or 3 girls around him in this type of series, especially someone with aura/rizz like Ayanokoji. (Idk how emotionally available he is for a relationship, but his charisma is undeniable). But when the author surrounded him with 5-6 girls instead of just 2-3, the series fell off for me. The fandom just devolved into debating 'who's Koji gonna date?' and 'who's the end girl?' Because the series leaned so hard into pandering and fanservice, we got robbed of actual outsmarting feats. Imo, Y1 Koji's feats > Y2 Koji's feats.

​But that wasn't the only issue. Let's look at the concept again: a badass MC in an elite school surrounded by waifus. This formula was obviously gonna attract a massive mainstream audience, and it did. In fact, it got so popular that it birthed an incredibly toxic fandom. These guys started shipping Ayanokoji so much that instead of giving us raw feats, the author basically felt forced to write a harem just to pander to the fans. During Y2, this toxic fanbase completely took over the SCD space on YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit, and started wanking the verse way beyond what it deserves. You had people scaling Takuya near Lelouch, Light, or Yuuichi, and Ayanokoji near Patrick Jane or sometimes even Baku and Souichi. This completely ruined SCD.

​Honestly, I really loved Koji. He’s still in my top 10, but the toxic meatriders definitely killed my hype for him. The series and Ayanokoji had limitless potential, but the fandom ruined Koji for me. Also, his dynamic with some of the girls is just forced and makes zero sense. Take Ichika for example. We never saw her having any ambition to be the #1 in the WR (White Room). I get why someone like her, who doesn't care about being #1, would respect Ayanokoji—they’re from the same facility and both just wanna chill for 3 years. But I don't get why she protects him so much. I literally don't understand why she interfered in the fight with Takuya. If she was aiming for the top spot or worshipping Koji like the other 5th Gen WR students, it would make sense. But since she’s not, her defending him makes no sense. There are a couple more forced dynamics like this, but I’ll leave it at that. TL;DR: The series still has massive potential, and I really hope Y3 volumes actually deliver on it. That's all from me
