Did John really consider rip as his son?

I have this doubt because once when asked if Casey was his youngest son he responded saying he’s his only son.

Second time, he said of all his kids he envy’s one, misses one, pity one, and regrets one. All 4 of his real children but didn’t mention rip as the 5th.

After that one letter that Beth brings to rip there was never any other mention of John considering rip as his son.

Rip in season5

I absolutely didn’t understand how rip was the calmest of them all with John’s death, I was expecting him to go berserk but he didn’t even bother with finding who killed him. It was very odd.

But him on the funeral day putting all the dirt back in and being the last one there talking was good scene.

Just binged it

I absolutely loved the show and how it tried to show the cowboy life in these modern times. I loved all the seasons except 2
