How Accurate Is Dutton Ranch? A Real-Life Rancher Reveals What's Fact and What's Fiction in the Hit Series

Jessie Jarvis, who was recently interviewed for an article in People magazine about Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, spoke about it the other day on her Facebook:

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Last week, I had a pretty incredible opportunity when a journalist from People Magazine reached out and asked if I would be interested in comparing Taylor Sheridan's new show, Dutton Ranch, to that of real life on a working ranch.

I know our industry has strong opinions, often in the negative, about Taylor Sheridan’s shows, but allow me to share my perspective on that.

Are Yellowstone/ Dutton Ranch 100% accurate? No.

Ask a doctor the same question about Grey's Anatomy, or ask a police officer about Law and Order…they’ll both probably say the same.

These shows aren't classified as documentaries or biopics. They are dramas. They aren’t claiming to be exact depictions, and it’s up to us to adjust our expectations accordingly.

In the world of television, you have to grab people's interest, tell a story, and set the scene for the next episode, all in 46-48 minutes. There’s no possible way that a show could show every single detail of an industry like ours in that short a time frame, and still be of interest to a viewer. There HAS to be added excitement and a dramatic element to keep people watching.

I am very impressed by Taylor Sheridan’s genuine passion for our industry and the way he brings in important elements that would otherwise be left out. His collection of shows highlights real cowboys, showcases disciplines like reining and reined cow horse, and uses the very best in cattle and horses, which is a depiction of our industry that I so appreciate.

Never before have agriculture and the western way of life been highlighted by mainstream news outlets, or as popular in pop culture as they have in the last eight years, and I think that is such an opportunity for our industry to continue to bridge this widening gap between boots on the ground and carts at the grocery store!!

What an opportunity!

I would watch the shit out of this show. 6666

Basically the title. Best storyline out of Yellowstone. I am smashing Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Loving them both, I seriously hope 6666 is still being made

Jamie

This man is so easily manipulated. I was a Jamie defender through season 3 because I felt sorry for him for Beth’s hatred toward him. I’m now on season 5 and honestly feel no empathy. He was manipulated by his father to be a lawyer, manipulated by his bio father to hate the family who raised him, and now is being manipulated by this bitch Sarah.

Did John really consider rip as his son?

I have this doubt because once when asked if Casey was his youngest son he responded saying he’s his only son.

Second time, he said of all his kids he envy’s one, misses one, pity one, and regrets one. All 4 of his real children but didn’t mention rip as the 5th.

After that one letter that Beth brings to rip there was never any other mention of John considering rip as his son.

I think the Jamie hate is unjustified.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but Jamie doesn't deserve 90% of the hate that he gets from his family.

The sterilization thing, okay, I can get on board with the hatred, even though he genuinely believed that he was helping and was trying to do what was in Beth and the family's best interest. But I'll buy that.

But I never saw someone get treated like such garbage by everyone for doing the exact things that they were telling him to do.

Even becoming a lawyer wasn't what he wanted. He wanted to be a rancher. That was forced on him and he was miserable.

His turn to villianhood was completely justified.

And let's face it. John Dutton was a good grandfather. But he wasn't a good father. John Dutton had children for his own interests.

Still enjoy the conflict, but I can feel for old Jamie.

Episode help

I was listening to an episode of the Yellowstone podcast and Jen Landon makes mention of an episode early on in the series where John supposedly tells Beth to stop fucking the help. I cannot for the life of me remember John saying anything like that to Beth. If he did say it, what episode was is it?

New Watcher: Am I suppose to be rooting for the Duttons?

Okay so before I get to the body of this I just want to note that I do actually enjoy the show, and I like most of the characters and I am currently on season 3

That said, am I suppose to be on the Duttons side?

Like I know, at least early seasons Taylor took a lot of inspiration from SoA, the whole big town developers coming and trying to change the local area, but unlike the Sons which were a small time club, the Duttons own a multi million dollar ranch, not exactly the small town heroes they act

Also, they are just so….horrible, like I know the idea is that they are morally grey but John is just a straight up villain, Jamie is a prick, Beth needs therapy and Kayce sees every problem as a nail and himself the hammer

Like don’t get me wrong, I like Kayce, Beth, Rip and most of the bunkhouse characters, but most are actually really shitty people who kinda deserve what happens to them

I find myself kinda rooting for Rainwater cause like, fuck John?

Also fuck the mother for that whole “ men will see you weak now so I gotta make you strong” bullshit abuse apologetic ass speech to child Beth

Like I get what he was going for, I do, but I find it kinda hard to sympathise with the Duttons

They fuck up and other people pay the price for it

John treats his kids like they’re tools and agents rather than actual children

Like does it get better? Or am I stuck hoping they get their just reward while also enjoying them haha?

Side note: why did they make Dan Jenkins security guard so fucking useless? Dude was ex SF and some sort of Fed and yet he got clowned by John with a wine bottle, dude seemed seemed exist just so the Duttons could dunk on him, he even forgot to ask Ryan for his handcuff keys, what kind of cop or SF does that? I feel for the character, he was just a punching bag

MW4 Concept for Yellowstone Operator Package - Spencer Dutton

Multi-player yeam death match pre game cut scene:

(Please don't mind the ai draft)

Interior. Military transport aircraft. Red jump lights illuminate rows of operators checking gear.

A massive, weathered man sits among them, looking completely out of place. No helmet. No comms headset. Just a heavy coat and a stare that says he's seen worse.

Young Operator:

"Sir, command says we have a satellite uplink if you need battlefield intelligence."

Spencer grunts.

Young Operator:

"... drones, thermal imaging, target acquisition."

Spencer:

"I got eyes."

The operator nervously nods.

A phone buzzes

Spencer picks it up.

Screen:

BREAKING: TMZ

Spencer:

"Ugh. What's TMZ?"

CRRRUNCH.

The phone explodes into pieces in his hand.

The aircraft goes silent.

Another Operator:

"...did he just..."

Veteran Squad Leader:

"Don't ask."

The pilot's voice crackles over the intercom.

"Thirty seconds to drop zone."

Green lights begin flashing.

Operators stand and check their rifles.

Spencer slowly rises to his feet. The aircraft seems smaller somehow.

Pilot:

"We're approaching the drop zone."

The rear bay door begins to open.

WHHHHHOOOOOOOSSSHHHH

Cold air rushes into the aircraft.

Below: a sprawling modern battlefield illuminated by tracers, explosions, and city lights.

Young Operator:

"What's the objective?

Spencer looks out into the darkness.

Spencer:

"Same as every other day."

Young Operator:

"Which is?"

Spencer chambers a round.

"Get home."

Music hits.

MATCH STARTING IN 3... 2... 1...

CONTROL TRANSFERRED TO PLAYER

The company only cares about the bottom dollar

This is a spoiler if you have not finished Yellowstone.

****Spoiler*****

So John gets killed and Beth is liquidating the assets. To avoid the death taxes. She sold horses, trailers, cows, whatever else that wasn’t tied down. I believe she made $30 million give or take.

The actions are over and Rip is saying goodbye. Basically thanks for killing people and committing all the felonies for us guys. Here’s your last paycheck and I out an additional $30 bucks in there to carry you through u til you find something.

Just proof the company never really cares about the employee as much as the bottom line

Gator Appreciation Post

I dunno, I just love the idea of the Ranch Chef- especially one who is awkwardly aware of all the family drama and just kinda smiles and nods and makes Beth vodka smoothies. Also I find the injection of the "non-actors" on the show charming for some reason (particularly looking at you, Jake). I have the cookbook and it's great. That's all, that's the post <3

Inheritance tax

I am kind of late but I just finished watching the whole YS series, and I’m still confused on how Beth and Kayce can’t afford to pay the tax after John died (correct me if I’m wrong here, based on my research is that inheritance tax doesn’t exist in montana, but in the series it does).

Is the money earned from auctioning the horses and equipments of the ranch not enough to pay the taxes? The ranch is approximately 885,000 acres right? and worth more than 8 billion so does that mean the tax would be worth 100+ millions? Sorry I don’t have that much knowledge about taxes.

Don’t they have any savings from the profit from the ranch and other investments?

Pardon my english, it’s not my first language

Did Rip and John ever have a conflict?

Or have they been on the same page thru the entire series? Because I dont remember a single time they had a disagreement or argument 🤔

Understanding the Politics

So for context, I'm not American and have very little to no knowledge or understanding of the dynamics and politics of the show. I dont even know how to word it properly without being ignorant tbh. I'm on the first episode and I'm just so confused. Please can someone explain it to me like I'm 5 years old 🫠

Profile Picture Meme

I made an Ian Bohen profile photo meme on Meme Generator. Largely from Yellowstone era photos of Bohen. Anyone got one for other actors/actresses from Yellowstone?

Is the spin-off debate resolved?

Marshals vs Dutton Ranch. Two sequels, one shared universe, different storylines. But what's actually different? I might have come across a few points that make sense.

I just realised the Diseased Bull was wasn't meant for Dutton Ranch, (it was for the 10Petals)

Whoever forged the bull documents wanting to do biological warfare didn't expect Beth to outbid Beulah.
