How to spot fake "Trump Trades" and verify real ones

How to spot fake "Trump Trades" and verify real ones

It's easy.

  • If it's done by Trump himself or Melania Trump, there should be an OGE 278e Form (annual report showing positions), or an OGE 278-T Form (report showing new transactions).
  • If it's done by another family member, their deals are significant enough to be an SEC Form D, an official press release, or to be reported by Reuters/WSJ. For smaller trades, they have no obligation to disclose. That legal requirement only covers spouse & dependent children.
  • If it's done by the Trump Administration, those are followed by a press release by either the related government institution, or by the company being funded. Major financial news outlets will also report on it.
  • For mentions/endorsements (not trades) by Trump, they all have social media accounts you can check.

I was chatting with friends earlier today where someone was talking about "Barron Trump buying $40m of oil before the Iran War".

I was a bit shocked because I track political trading for (sort of) a living and I had never heard of it. Turns out the source was a random anonymous Twitter account.

Note: This post doesn't label stocks mentioned/endorsed by Trump as false information. It is specifically about claims on "trades".
