Feedback on my project about a preserve I used to frequent a lot

Hey guys,

I made a web map, via Experience Builder, about a preserve I used to frequent. The general purpose behind it is to give hikers and end-users the ability to plan before they go.

The main problem I encountered was that the owners of the land don't have an Open GIS Data portal, so the only data that's available would be through photographs, static maps, mobile apps (e.g. Avenza, Alltrails, Strava, etc.), and web apps (e.g. Google Maps, Google Earth Pro, etc.). For example, if you want to know about elevation profile of the trails on Alltrails and Strava, you have to pay a subscription. Also, most of the pictures on Google Images, Yelp, and Tripadvisor aren't geocoded. So unless you ask for permission and you have an ArcGIS account, accessing their data isn't available.

The solution for hikers and end-users would be to create an interactive web app through ArcGIS Experience Builder so that hikers would know the trail difficulty and facilities (e.g. benches, picnic tables, bulletins, parking) ahead of time before they go. They can do this by checking the Elevation Profile (top of the screen) which gives them Summary Statistics of a trail segment, export data in table format, reverse direction, and adjust their cursor on the chart corresponding to the entire trail. Additionally, they will fill out a survey via Survey123 (right side of the screen) to document what the trails look like, and the pictures will be uploaded in point data once approved and vetted.

I also feel like there's more that needs to be done before I feel like this is complete. For example, I'd like to calculate difficulty of the trails using Python and create a StoryMap with the intention to encourage people to come to the place by populating it with pictures.

I look forward to your guys' feedback!

Conda or Pip for Package Management?

On one hand I've been familiar with Anaconda Navigator for so long by using Jupyter Notebooks, Spyder, and R. But on the other hand, I'd like to try pip. What do you guys use, and what should I use when continuing to learn Python to do GIS?

Learning curve from ArcGIS Pro to QGIS

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in transitioning my personal use in GIS over to QGIS, and am hopeful I can continue making GIS projects like I usually do in the ArcGIS suite. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to do projects just as much as I have done in ArcGIS Pro. I'm still trying to get used to their UX/UI, and I feel like it's going to take time for me to have confidence to take on any GIS project possible (just like I do in ArcGIS Pro). Overall, I'd like to get your experiences of transitioning from ArcGIS Pro to QGIS. What were the hardest parts of making that transition?

Even if I live in the US (where the vast majority of companies use Arc), is the transition still worth it?

Thank you and I look forward to your responses.

Zettelkasten for revisiting concepts that hasn't been touched

Long-time lurker here!

I already have literature notes and permanent notes both written out and ID'd, but I'm struggling to be able to turn that into output.

One of the things I want to do is to write an output to gauge how well I understand SQL functions and operators, for example, how would I go about connecting the permanent notes.

Also if there's a permanent note that may have little to do with SQL, but I think is a good principle for SQL, how would that happen?

Regarding the "Report the bully" posts on this sub.

Hey r/bullying,

Lurker here.

In a nutshell, the user or a family/friend who's claims they've been bullied and then asks the sub to go and report on the user's behalf.

Should there be a rule regarding such posts? On one hand, I sympathize with them because I've had to report bullying to school admin and teachers before and then the bullying doesn't stop. Additionally some people on the internet can be assholes, and I've encountered several of those particularly on Twitter, Reddit, and Discord. But on the other hand, the onus is on the user to prove that what they're alleging is true and the fact that we're not the legal system and are under no obligation to help.

I'm hopeful that the bullying stops for them, but at the same time I'd say try and resolve it with the moderators there first, and if they refuse to follow through, they can go here. If the bullying involves criminal acts, they should definitely go to the police.

What are your guys' thoughts?
