Could Sony End CD Production?
I'm assuming this is a stupid question, but the recent announcement of Playstation ending disc production has me spooked, so I'm asking this here since Google wasn't much help. Obviously Sony controls all of the Playstation disc production, so it's very easy for them to stoo game disc production. But, they also helped develop the Blue Ray and the CD. So that had me wondering:
- How much control does Sony currently have with the general production of CDs (not publishing or pressing, but the actual manufacturing of the discs themselves)?
- Could Sony stop the production of them wholesale or strong arm partners to do so? I don't know if CDs are used much more these days outside of selling pre recored music, so would that just effect labels?
- What would Sony have to gain from ending CD production beyond general manufacturing cost savings? Yeah, they have their own label, but they don't have a music platform where they've cornered the market like the Playstation Store does for games. It's not like they own Spotify or something, so I'm not sure how much control they would gain over the music industry by cutting off CD production.
Sorry if this post isn't allowed, but I'm genuinely curious if you all have any insight on this. Thank you.
