With a heavy heart - it's back to Gnome

So, for the first time, while using Cosmic on my laptop, I decided to fire up a Citrix Workspace session to get some real work done. With the Cosmic DE, the resolution of the session was off. All appeared very tiny, and sadly, I am unable to make adjustments to the remote session's display settings.

I switched to Gnome and the remote session has perfect resolution.

With Cosmic and Gnome being so close in usability for me, the one that delivers when I need to get some work done on it will win as my default. I'll keep COSMIC installed and have a look now and again.

I don't know what is the cause for the Citrix Workspace remote session resolution not adjusting to match my desktop. I've tried everything but think it's just Cosmic since I try nothing on Gnome. It simply works.

So it would seem that for straightforward activity in Cosmic, it's working great, but I know that running a Citrix Workspace remote desktop session is on the fringe.

COSMIC DE on Tumbleweed

The COSMIC DE is being developed quite rapidly. It's now at full release with the latest release being Epoch 1.0.16.

Is there anyone running COSMIC well on Tumbleweed? Is the COSMIC repo being maintained?

I recently switched to Tumbleweed and chose Gnome as DE just to keep the problems/challenges to a minimum while getting myself up to speed with the system. I now have Tumbleweed fully setup and am now thinking of COSMIC again, which I prefer to Gnome.

iMac M1 sound

Asahi Linux has been running really, really well on my iMac M1 for the last several months. Upgrading from Fedora 43 to 44 was also smooth and without issue.

The one achilles heal of the system has been sound. Neither internal speakers or microphone work.

So far, I've successfully got sound going by using a USB DAC and an external speaker with Aux input.

However, with microphone, I plugged in a RøDE USB microphone but it's not at all recognised, it seems. OTOH, it's instantly recognised and works when I plug it into my Framework Laptop running openSUSE Tumbleweed.

Anyone having positive experience using a USB microphone with Asahi? If so, which one are you using? Did it simply work or did you have to do any extra setup?

COSMIC over-riding some app window size presets.

I've noted that Ghostty window size presets are being ignored with COSMIC opening a new window at its own set size. The same is occurring with evolution. The only window size that is retained is if the window is maximised.

Anyone else noting some apps not retaining window size across re-starts?

Am I glad I decided to take the plunge with Cosmic.

I have Fedora installed on my iMac M1 (Asahi remix) and also Silverblue installed on a Framework laptop 13. I've not been completely happy with Gnome. Although the general workflow is good barring a few niggles, I've been concerned about the development teams attitude towards the point at which users should look to extensions and other helpers to enhance their desktop experience.

I decided the give Cosmic a spin since on looking at reviews, I was confident that I could replicate my Gnome workflow .... and more, without the use of extensions. I first installed it on Fedora Asahi and very soon after, rebased Silverblue to Cosmic Atomic.

I've been really impressed. It's running well and will be my daily driver. Only two issues so far... the first is that the panel Applications menu applet seems to randomly go on the blink and will not open. This seems to be a known problem. This has not been a deal breaker for me since I primarily use the launcher. Secondly, the screen reader accessibility option was enabled by default with each install. On the laptop, this was immediately evident because I have sound. However, on the iMac, where sound is a problem (not related to Cosmic, but Asahi), the keyboard would behave very weirdly, forcing me to reboot. It was after a web search that I came across a report of a similar problem which was secondary to the screenreader being enabled. On checking, sure enough, it was enabled, and once disabled, no problems!

IMO, developement should concentrate on stabilising and maturing the current feature-set which is already great. The DE cannot be all things for all, especially regarding file management, text editors, terminal emulators and such... I think the current offerings are adequate. More demanding users already use their own apps for these tasks anyway. I'm not a developer or programmer. I'm just a regular desktop user and I already use my own text editor, file manager and terminal emulator.

Before rebasing, I did some searching to see if this was something that had been done by others and whether there would be any issues. I saw quite a bit about rebasing from Silverblue to Kinoite, but not the other way around.

I have only three layered apps, i.e., Windscribe, Zsh and Vim-enhanced.

The rebase went smoothly and Gnome is up and running well. Here's what I did prior to running the rebase command: Updated the system - rpm-ostree update Updated flatpaks - flatpak update Updated LinuxBrew/Homebrew Rebooted. I then pinned the Kinoite install in case I would need to rollback.

Surprisingly smooth without any hitches. But then, only three layered apps and I am doing all this on a Framework13 Laptop without any challenging hardware (no NVIDIA - eeeek!).

I use Windscribe Pro and have the app installed along with F1TV Pro on my Amazon Firestick.

So I streamed the Miami F1 race live today, trying two servers in Netherlands (I gave up on one and tried another hoping for better performance). It was painful with many interruptions while buffering and a few incidents of errors where I had to exit/restart F1TV app and reinitialise the stream.

Hopefully, today was just a one-off and that this will not be the new norm.
