Does anyone have experience of the BEng, in particular the environmental or energy route?
I’ve been studying environmental science with the OU and have really enjoyed it, I’ve completed U116 and S112 and have just chosen my modules for stage 2. The reason I chose env sci is simply because I love ecology and conservation and that would be my dream career, but I do voluntary work in conservation already and I know it’s difficult to find sustainable paid work in it. I volunteer with a few different charities and pretty much everyone is also a volunteer, the few paid staff are all on contracts and have to bounce around place to place. Most of the skills needed are also very much self taught, I have one surveying license and plan to get others but these don’t need any formal qualifications at all so I could try to stay in conservation even without a degree.
I’ve been thinking about changing my degree to the BEng instead, as they do an environmental route and an energy route both of which do interest me and I think might have more career options that are still satisfying to me.
The downsides that I’m foreseeing so far is that there’s no placement options and I hear engineering is a difficult industry to break into now especially if you don’t have any practical experience, and I also don’t know if my maths will ever be good enough. I got through the env sci modules but it was difficult.
