[SLD] Knuckles the Echidna, borderless and regular frames

[[Knuckles the Echidna]], the ugliest MtG card ever created*, re-imagined as a denizen of an Australian-themed region of Bloomburrow.

I was so thrilled to find this gorgeous art! I had given up on finding an illustration of an echidna that wasn’t Sonic the Hedgehog fanart and I was preparing to draw my own artwork, when I finally stumbled upon this perfect image while searching for reference photos of echidnas. (My search phrase was “echidna scientific illustration” and I don’t know why that worked.)

Piggy Bank with new art

A week or so ago, there was a discussion here about [[Piggy Bank]] in which many people expressed that, while it's great mechanically, the art is really unpleasant to look at. I share that opinion, and this card has been on my to-do list for reskinning for a while.

I finally found an artwork I could use, which was tricky for this type line. The flavor text is doing the heavy lifting for justifying the Toy type, but I'm happy with it. "Tumbaga" is a term for an alloy of copper and gold that was used in various cultures for decorative and sacred objects.

Did anyone here draft Unstable? How was it, especially the Contraption mechanic?

I love a lot of the art in Unstable, especially the Order of the Widget and the contraptions (just look at [[Dogsnail Engine]], it is perfection). However, I never got to draft that set and have never played with the cards, other than trying to make a constructed host/augment deck that taught me that host/augment is incredibly weak (mutate is the fixed version of host/augment).

Does anyone here have experience with the set? Was the contraption/sprocket mechanic annoying or fun? Were the archetypes balanced and not too on-rails? What cards are especially fun or not fun? Were there any cards that would be good in black-border play as-is or with minor tweaks (such as [[Blurry Beeble]] that is unblockable)?

In short, what elements of Unstable would you use in a cube and what would you leave out?

[40K] Chaos Defiler (borderless and regular frame)

[[Chaos Defiler]] from 40K, borderless and regular frames, with and without bleed (the extra margin needed for printing). The art for the borderless version doesn’t quite reach the top of the card edge in the bleed version because if I zoomed in the art any more, the head would overlap the title frame. I've asked in the MPC discord for help extending the art to the edge, but no bites yet.

Played tonight from my cube and was visited by the spirits of z4nder and vaca

I recently received my proxy order and overhauled my main cube, which is unpowered Vintage and has numerous cards included based on the passionate and well-reasoned arguments of u/mikez4nder and u/vacalicious. Their spirits were with us when we played it tonight.

My spouse and I don't often have time/energy to both draft and play, so I had built two decks (blue/white control and black reanimator) from the CubeCobra simulator bots. My spouse declined my offer to look through the decks before playing and we chose our decks at random.

In the first game, I cast [[Clocknapper]], included due to z4nder's frequent/passionate recommendations, and stole his beginning phase. He spluttered in indignation about "what is this bullshit, you have Un-cards in here?" Yes, sweetie, and Playtest cards, you knew this. Second game, he turn-1 [[Thoughtseize]]'d me. I thought of z4nder, who often waxes poetic about that card, and I smiled inside.

Later, my spouse cast [[Crabomination]], which I had previously excluded from my cube list due to having a giant wall of text, but put back in after reading vaca's incredibly sweet anecdotes about how much his 4-year-old daughter loves that card. At this point I told my spouse that we were being visited by the spirits of the cube subreddit and told him why those cards were included in my cube. The Crab's ETB got [[Eerie Interlude]] from my hand, so he flickered the Crab. The card exiled from the top of my library was [[Ephemerate]]. "I have to do it for that little girl," he said as he flickered the Crab once more, its ETB leaving me with no cards in hand. For his 3rd Crab spell, he [[Swords to Plowshares]]'d my only creature threat. At this point we both had plenty of life, but I had lost my will to live.

Great stuff. He forgave me for Clocknapper.

[LTR] Galadriel, Gift-Giver (borderless and regular frames, with and without bleed)

[[Galadriel, Gift-Giver]] from LTR in regular and borderless frames. I originally wanted to set this on New Capenna due to the sewing machine in the background, but when checking existing card art, I realized Capennan elves have little forehead horn/tendril thingies. So, Ravnica it is. I’m sure they import technologies and luxury goods from New Capenna and Avishkar these days via Omenpath. When she was going to be Capennan, her name was Galatea, which I like a bit better but doesn’t fit Ravnica’s Slavic vibe.

[MSH] Epic Fight and [MSC] Lockjaw, Slobbering Teleporter, Ikoria-style (with and without bleed)

[[Epic Fight]] from MSH and [[Lockjaw, Slobbering Teleporter]] from MSC, Ikoria-style. I love Ikoria.

I’ve started adding the OM1 set symbol to more clearly indicate rarity and adding the original name in the collector info along with the set code and collector number. I’m also starting to add watermarks to cards that are meant to be set on a particular plane. Eventually I’ll go back and add watermarks to my earlier cards.
