Is a range hood worth adding?

We just moved into a new house, but we don't see any exhaust fan or range hood. The kitchen is open to the living room, so now er are debating whether we really need to install one.

I'm trying to understand how necessary it is. Imo, a range hood is a big fan that pullls smoke away and vent it out, so would opening a window plus using a fan do almost the same thing? Or maybe putting an air purifier in the kitchen? Back when I lived alone in apartments, most places either didn't have a hood or the hood barely did anything, so it's hard for me to justify spending a lot of money on one. I always thought the true must-have appliances were things like a dishwasher, fridge, and washer. If one of those needed replacing, I wouldn’t hesitate. My wife thinks we absolutely need one before cooking regularly. She's already looking at wall mounted hoods and she found one that's supposed to capture smoke from multiple angles with high-speed backward airflow. And it uses centrifugal force to separate grease. I honestly don’t know much about newer range hood tech, does that actually work? Did you install a range hood? Was it worth it?
