lesson plan for my first observation?

hey guys! I’m in a full year leave placement currently, so I’m being handled like typical full-time non-tenured staff. this year basically is like a long term interview because some tenured-track positions are opening up soon in the district. I’m getting observed during my first block studio art (9/10th grade) and am still undecided on the lesson I want to teach. for experienced teachers, have you found it better to do a 1 day lesson to show the full process? My classes are 90 minutes and the principal will be there for around an hour of it, in the middle. I’m trying to think of a lesson that has group collaboration and a good artist motivator + the kids keep asking me for a halloween/fall themed lesson. anything that worked well for anyone here in the past? tips/tricks?

high school jewelry teachers- what projects can you do without heat tools?

hi guys! I’m a first year teacher with jewelry as part of my course load. it’s a cold joining class meaning we don’t have proper equipment or ventilation for heat tools. I explained this to students day 1 and they seemed so disappointed (this is specified in the course handbook). a lot of students were looking forward to “making charm necklaces” and “making jewelry that doesn’t tarnish” when I asked what they were excited to learn in a survey. the projects I’m planning to teach include woven bracelets, paper beads, polymer clay charms, ceramic pendants, wire wrapping, upcycling, and chainmaille. if you are a high school jewelry teacher, what are some projects you’ve taught that kids love regardless of their expectations?

I 22F asked my mom 45F to go to family counseling. went worse than I could have imagined.

I (22F) got in a fight with my mom (45F) a week ago. she came up to me angry during a fight with my youngest sister (12F) while I was checking on our middle sister (15F). she yelled at me “what my problem was”, pointing her finger in my face. I backed into my room and said she was angry and I’m not going to answer while she was yelling in my face. she started on a tangent of her distain for me, (I’m not helpful to the family, an adult in her house influencing her children, freeloader looking for money, etc).

I just graduated college and wanted to move out. my parents convinced me to stay home and save money during my first year of full time work. it’s a big insecurity of mine, along with money. I’ve worked every day I could since I was 14 to provide for myself. I also have gotten closer to my middle sister as she’s gotten older despite the age gap, so all of these obviously cut deep. I’m also not full blood related to both my sisters since my mom got pregnant in college and remarried. she started yelling to get out of her house, so I started back with how perfect that would be so she can have her family of 4 without me in the picture. I said we all need professional help with how angry and aggressive our household is. she was appalled by my comment and took everyone and left. I broke down sobbing, my mom and I had a really rough time in high school. she was stricter and not very warm when I was going through a rough time. I was severely suicidal and depressed and not receiving the support I needed.

when they got back home hours later, I met them downstairs at the kitchen table. they didn’t acknowledge me for a bit, so I said we should all go to family counseling and she started blowing up. she said I’m the only issue in the family and they are all fine without me being there. my youngest sister has behavioral issues which started their argument earlier in the day. my middle sister disagreed saying they’ve always had problems. we continued for nearly 2 hours of my mom yelling at me, me trying to calmly explain my side, my dad on his phone, and both my sisters left. while crying I said how I’m scared to not have a relationship with any of them once I move out with the way we communicate. my mom said she and my dad have always been loud and hard, and I should have accepted that.

I was trying to be vulnerable, but just felt defeated and embarrassed. I ended up with a throbbing headache from crying and threw up as soon as they left. in the week since, I’ve just been severely depressed, the same in high school. friday my mom asked why my mood was about. I’m just so over exhausted and not sure if there’s a way to feel normal. I think I was a bad egg born into the wrong family. my partner’s family is also dysfunctional in a different way so there’s no comfort to find there. I know every family has their moments but I feel like they are non stop. it’s getting harder to address the older I get. do I just proceed with life without a family?

is this appropriate to wear as a high school art teacher?

I found this top while thrifting with my grandma (retired school secretary) and she was visibly and verbally appalled at it. I thought it was cute and classy with the asymmetrical hem and high back. I do acknowledge the neckline is a little low which is why the previous owner probably had the paperclip. I’m a fiber artist so it would take 2 minutes to put in a button or just sew it shut. I dress a little less traditional for work (lots of dresses, bold colors, jumpsuits, layers, etc) but have never thought my outfits are inappropriate, usually school staff lets me know how adorable and full of energy I look based on how I style my clothes. I also went to a very liberal college where all the pre service teachers wore pretty out there stuff and were covered in tattoos, so this feels small potatoes. she specifically said it’s too revealing in the bust- I have gone up a couple sizes in the past year so I’m not sure it would be seen as an issue on an a XS a cup me, but I don’t think it’s inherently inappropriate now that I have a bigger bust, arms, and back. I’m fine to take the loss on this, but just want a second opinion since I’m younger and don’t want to offend when I’m just starting out

if you’re 21-25 what career do you have? how much money do you make/save?

invasive, I know sorry, but I’m struggling to get a bit of perspective on how well me and my closest people are doing for our age. I feel like I save, but it’s never enough and I’m always broke. everyone seems to always be going on holidays across the country and I’m debating a soda from the grocery store lol. or in reverse, I feel like maybe I’m too judgy on my friends who don’t have a lot and aren’t super into their careers because we all just got out of college. I know there’s no right or wrong answer, but just wondering how my other mid 20 year olds are feeling. safe space for either side lol

I (21F) feel like I’m on a different path than partner (23M), what would you do?

I’ve been stressing about this for a long time, so who else to ask than reddit. I’m 21 just out of college and work in the field of education. I’ve always known I was going to do something in that field, and started perusing opportunities at 14. This is going to be my first year on actual salary as I’ve always worked part time and seasonally during school.

My partner has been in the workforce for 2 years since finishing community college. he took a gap year after college not working to figure out what he wanted to do. He decided in cc the year before that he really wanted to work in photography, he took classes in it and loved it. He took some seasonal jobs here and there that were inconsistent and minimum wage, but enjoyed it. He’s spent all his holiday money and some spending on new cameras, equipment, lenses, etc so that he can have the best stuff. He started a website and got merch, posted on social media, etc to start his brand. This was all about 2 years ago and it’s been very slow since then. in that gap year of having no job, he obviously went broke, so he got a job in a warehouse.

Fast forward to now and he’s telling me he’s not looking to peruse photography anymore and he’s just going to work in the warehouse. I wanted to move in together this summer after college, but he couldn’t match my savings as he makes hourly almost minimum wage. all of this is fine, but when I bring up trying to find a career with actual good pay and salary nothing comes from it. It stresses him out every time I bring it up, but I don’t know how else to get him what he needs us we don’t talk out a plan.

We’re a great match and our lives are deeply intertwined, but I’m so stressed about finances. We both grew up in homes that had to worry about money, and my mom’s biggest concern is me struggling supporting 2 people financially. He said his dream is to be a stay at home dad, and I would love that for him if I was in a higher paying field.

Should we try to talk to a career counselor? A couples therapist? I don’t know how to help/handle someone who is so unmotivated towards career, and I wouldn’t care what he did if we didn’t have to constantly worry about spending money even when living at our parent’s houses to save. I’m just a little bit desperate, I don’t want to end things but also am exhausted trying to solve a possible impossible puzzle.

partner wants to be a photographer, is he out of luck or lazy?

coming from an outsider perspective looking to seek professionals in the industry. my partner has wanted to be a professional photographer for years now, since community college. he did some portrait and product work for his classes and took a lot of photos for fun. he’s never been very driven towards anything career wise so the discovery of a potential path was a relief for me.

the issue is, we live in a smaller town in new york that doesn’t have a lot of job openings for photographers. he’s worked at a school portrait company for a couple years, but it’s seasonal and pays minimum wage. he’s made his own website and has business cards, but from my background knowledge of art, it’s less than desirable. the design is clunky, the blurbs sound fake, and his best work isn’t showcased. I’ve brought it up and sat down to fix it with him, but he said his dad has ownership and he can’t edit it himself.

he works in a warehouse in the off season and told me he doesn’t think he’ll return to the school photo studio in the fall. he claims he still wants to do photography, but there’s no effort to building a brand, social media, or even going out to take pictures.

as photographers, do you think this is a problem due to location? how did you start off and what can I do to help him? I don’t want this to be relationship ending, but he’s frustrated he’s not gaining any traction, and I’m stressed because I’m in a low paying career also in the arts and need bills to be payed.

I’ve looked up youtube videos, put him in contact with photographer friends, but it’s still not working for him. he’s passionate and would be a great photographer in action, but I’m not sure if this is cut out for him.

send help :,)

What’s a project you would have wanted to do as a secondary student?

I of course am going to teach foundational art lessons to my new studio art class, but what are some fun lessons you loved as a student or things you wish your teacher had done? I’m always trying to think out of the box and reflect the student’s interests along with the necessary skills

first year high school teacher- what do I need?

I’m starting my first year teaching at a high school with a great well funded art program. there are 5 of us that alternate between a shared open studio of 3 classrooms. I’ll technically be teaching off a cart, but have my own desk in the faculty office. what things could I get to help me stay organized/prepared for the new school year? I was thinking a file box since I teach 3 different types of classes, studio, jewelry, and interior design. kind of starting from 0 so any recs are appreciated! 🎨💕

trying to wing my cst this weekend- help

can someone who recently took their cst share their experience? I found this practice test on the website and did fine (pass) for my first go, but I’m wondering how accurate the questions are to the actual test. I’m not a great test taker, broke so I really can’t spend the $120 more than once and am too busy at work to be able to sit down with a legit book. I’ve been ponding a couple quizlets for a week, but the information didn’t seem very accurate to the practice test. I am usually more prepared for this stuff, but getting desperate. any/all info would be helpful <3 :)
