North West roller rink closing 😢‼️

Hey guys, I know this is in Wigan, not Liverpool exactly but it’s got to be worth a shot as so many Liverpudlians have probably been to the Wigan roller rink at some point.

The Wigan Roller Rink has been forced to close by August 2026. 🛼‼️ Wigan is just outside of Liverpool.

Skating rinks are closing all over the UK - we lost the IWF in Liverpool in January this year, Manchester’s Skate World two years ago and now the famous Wigan rink is set to close in August 2026. But it is more than that. We are losing community spaces of all kinds, to developers who are greedy for money.

This community space is truly special and unique - independently owned/ran, the friendliest people, a DJ with live music, a skate shop, AND it’s the biggest wooden floor rink in the UK. It is accessible, inclusive and a great way to make new friends and stay active.

No where in the UK (or outside of London anyway) is there anything like the Wigan roller rink to skate.

But now the developers (the Heaton Group) are forcing the owners to close and leave the property. In the initial plans there was an agreement to save the floor and relocate the space elsewhere in Wigan, but now the developers have gone back on that due to ‘budget’ and are bulldozing the lot to make way for yet more gentrified apartments and housing.

It is a treasured piece of Wigan culture and history and must be saved, or at least relocated!

Please, please help us in saving the rink. I’ve attached a link to a petition to sign if you can spare a moment.

Thanks so much for reading. All support is greatly appreciated. 🛼

Jellyfish at the Docks

Was strolling around the docks earlier today (Sunday 17/05) and was amazed - and also confused, when I saw HUNDREDS of small jellyfish in the water at the docks near the Tate/diner bus.

Are they regularly here? And does anyone know why they are there?
They are on the other side of one of the docks’ many water gates (inside the docks, not sea side) 🪼

Wigan UK Roller Rink ‼️

Heartbroken and gutted to hear about the closure of Wigan Roller Rink, North West UK. Truly a pillar for the North West skating community. 💔💔💔

We lost the IWF in Liverpool in January this year, then I found Wigan and the light was brought back into my life! I couldn’t believe what an amazing rink it was - the friendliest people, the DJ with live music, the skate shop, the biggest wooden floor rink in the UK. I felt like I’d finally found my happy place.

I moved to Liverpool from Newcastle a couple years ago - there isn’t much of a scene up in the North East compared to the NW and no where in the UK have I seen anything like Wigan’s rink to skate.

This morning I saw the post on Facebook and a few tears were shed - I haven’t even been going for the 40+ years most people in the comments have been! But I know what a special place it is, and to be losing it is huge.

I have a strange ‘what now?’ feeling… trying not to feel hopeless as the community in the NW is so big that something new might happen/we can find a new space to continue growing our community. The doors close in August and you bet I’ll be making the most of our limited time left at that wonderful place!

My thoughts go out to the owners who are clearly heartbroken to be closing it (due to landlord issues) and to all the community who have now lost their happy place.
